4F Craftin’: Simple Spring Bunting (made from) Napkins
I will show you how to repurpose your napkins into a simple spring bunting!
Napkins now are made with such incredibly beautiful designs, colours, and patterns that it has become a shame to use them just to wipe your dirty face on! I have some napkins that are so decorative and pretty that every time I go to put them on the table I get a sharp stab of pain in my left side. It literally hurts me to think of using them so carelessly. And frankly it hurts them, too.
So on behalf of beautiful napkins everywhere, I decided to give them the glory they deserve. Instead of carelessly wiping my face on them and then throwing them away, I used them to create some simple spring buntings. Now I’m here to tell you how you can rescue and repurpose your beautiful napkins as well.
These spring buntings were super simple and fast. All you need is:
- glue gun and glue
- thin coordinating ribbon
- scissors
- embellishments (if desired)
1. Begin by folding all of your napkins in half. You want the side without the napkinish “ridges” to be on the front and the “ridgey” side to be on the back.
2. Next, use a thin bead of hot glue to glue together all the layers of the napkins (one layer at a time) so that the pieces don’t flare apart once hung. You want it to resemble a solid piece of fabric once glued.
3. Once they are glued and are a solid triangular shape, glue a ribbon to the top of the napkin, spacing evenly between each flag. I used a little spare slice of napkin to ensure that the spacing was even between each piece.
You are now finished! You may wish to add a little additional fun embellishment, or you may not.
I used some pretty wooden butterflies and birds that I had picked up at a local dollar store. I alternated the napkin colours and used alternating colours of my little creatures on each napkin so that they would stand out.
I used this embellished bunting to add some bright springy colour to our vintage window frame mirror above the living room couch. (Mirrors are sure hard to photograph against!)
Across from the couch sits our red armoire (aka our faux mantel) and I used some simple (unembellished) napkin buntings to decorate it.
And I also used them to adorn the round mirror in our dining room.
I’m really pleased with how well they turned out. Unless you go up really closely to inspect with your magnifying glass you truly wouldn’t know that the buntings are made from napkins and not beautiful paper or fabric! They were fast, frugal, and I think they look fabulous. They certainly tie together all the springy colours that we’ve been adding to the room (open concept dining/living) over the past couple of weeks. It is cheerful having them… and they feel cheerful having been rescued from our dirty faces:)
And if you want to see another napkin-bunting-rescue, head over to The Craft Fairy where my friend Megan used pretty napkins and paint chips to create a floral garland for her dining room.
What type of things are you doing to add spring colour in your home? Any bunting? I think pillows might be next on my agenda… after the laundry room reveal! I’ll be back with that very soon!
Thanks for reading. And remember, my housie friends, HOME was not built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

Love love this project. I also love your last line that HOME was not built in a day. Very witty, but also gives us new Houssies some hope 🙂
Thanks Samantha!
I used to feel so rushed to have everything already perfect in my house, but now I have learned and realized not to rush things and to let my style and our home evolve over time. I love that I truly don’t know quite where it might take me! Thanks for reading,
