Classic Christmas Dining Room & Kitchen Tour

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly two years since we finished off our kitchen renovation.

I remember waiting anxiously for our countertops to be installed. And our sink and faucet to be plumbed.

On December 20th.

Two days before our family arrived to stay for the holidays.

It took us a few months after that to get all the details finished up; but just getting our kitchen functional again for Christmas was such an amazing gift that year. Especially after four months of cooking in a cold, dark garage.

The kitchen and dining room are such key areas of your home during the holidays; that it’s kind of important to have them, not just pretty, but functional.

Because it is where the meals are cooked.

The cookies are baked.

The drinks are poured.

And, inevitably, it’s where everyone gathers. Between the dining room and the kitchen.

So I’ve tried to add as much warmth and love to our Christmas decor in these rooms as I did in our living room, front porch, and entry hall.

And I’ve definitely stayed with the classic Christmas feel of the rest of those spaces as well…

Today I’m joining up with a group of amazing Canadian bloggers who are also sharing their Christmas home tours in order to offer you even more beautiful inspiration! At the bottom of this post you can find more details about the #CBHomeTour, hosted by the amazing and talented Christina from The DIY Mommy.

And if you are popping over from one of these lovely bloggers’ homes, then welcome!

My name is Krista, and I’ve been blogging here for about three years now. I live with my husband and two boys (6 and 9 years old) just outside of a small community in the middle of Vancouver Island, BC. We live on a lovely freshwater lake and our decor scheme reflects that; though this Christmas I’ve gone with a cabin-chic winter woodland classic Christmas feel.

You can read more about me and this blog here. Or take our full home tour here

Now let’s get you out of the cold!

Come on in for our Christmas Kitchen and Dining Room tour…

dining-room

From our living room you can head right into our dining room – they are really just two parts of a big open room; and the kitchen is directly attached to the dining room. Our dining room also leads out to our lake front deck; which is a little cold and damp this time of year, so we’ll just stay inside for today.

I made this Pottery Barn Knock Off PEACE Sign a couple of Christmas’ ago and I always enjoying bringing it out each season.

The giant village houses are another favourite Christmas find that I’ve had for years and years now… Elfie likes them too {his name is Erik Santason}.

Our vintage church pew is one of my favourite pieces in our dining room {thanks to the great friends who gave it to us!}; along with the farmhouse table that my Dad built us using some gorgeous legs from Osborne Wood Products. I shared the table last year but still haven’t shared the tutorial – I’m going to write that down for January!

Our decor is really a mix of collected finds. The pew is vintage; the table was built by my Dad; the chairs are from Urban Barn (they no longer carry them) and the end chairs are from HomeSense. The light fixture is from Wayfair; the wreaths from Canadian Tire; the round baskets from a local decor shop (3 bucks!), and the signs in the baskets are from the Dollar Giant. The pine garland is from Costco,  the rug is from Ikea, and the Christmas cushions are from a mix of places; the red and white reindeer cushions were from my local Dollarama last year (3 bucks, again!). The jars on the table are from Walmart (stuffed with snow and lights and village pieces), and the runner is buffalo check fabric from Fabricland. The boxwood garland on the table is from Wayfair, as are the tin can luminaries.

I made these double sided napkins myself last year and shared the tutorial here.  The plates were bought second hand (from a friend), and the placemats are from Ikea.

I like to keep my wrapping materials close on hand, and why not, when the papers are so pretty? Plus, maybe it means I will get my wrapping done before Christmas Eve this year.

Most of the papers and ribbons are from HomeSense or Canadian Superstore, but a few are from Walmart as well.

Now let’s head from the dining room into our kitchen…

kitchen

Our kitchen is definitely one of my favourite and, of course, one of the most used rooms in our house. The view of the lake from the big windows that we had installed during the renovation are a highlight.

I kept things fairly basic for the holidays; lots of greenery and a few pops of red. The three tiered tray is from Canadian Tire (search Ornament Tray), and the wreaths were from Walmart last year. I got the garland at Costco (it’s the same as the garland in the dining room – we could talk about how people were looking at me when I marched out of Costco with about ten giant boxes of garland this year).

We made this big chalkboard the other day for the side of the kitchen cabinet – it’s super lightweight and was a very easy DIY. I’ll be sharing the tutorial for it really soon.

I picked up the tin sign over the stove when my family and I were in Switzerland last summer visiting our close friends. I did get a few looks going through airport security with it because of course it wouldn’t actually fit in my luggage!

classic-christmas-kitchen-and-christmas-dining-room-at-the-happy-housie-16

Can you tell we have a lot of cedar trees around our house?! My husband went to town cutting boughs for me this year; such a good guy.

I picked this vintage syrup tin up at a garage sale a few years back; the same one where I got a  waterski that usually hangs on our wall, as well as the cheese-drum side table we have in the living room.

What a score that garage sale was; truly the stuff that garage-sale dreams are made of.

This tiered stand has been quite a hit so far; and I’m thankful to my friend for searching all over a nearby community to track down the Canadian Tire that we didn’t know had moved… all in order to pick it up for me. #bloggerfriendhazards

I’m not gonna lie. The marshmallows lasted exactly until the photo shoot was over; my six-year old hovered in the background as I took my last photos and asked me continually if he could eat them yet.

It was a bit of an issue on Monday morning when I woke up and went to pour my morning coffee but couldn’t figure out where all the mugs were.

Luckily I clued in eventually…
