Command Center Organization {Week One Challenge}
Good morning, friends!
Have you been following along with my 10 week organizational challenge?
I shared all the details about the whole challenge last week…
This is week one of the challenge, and my goals for this first week of the challenge were to:
- Go through, purge and then organize your paperwork
- Develop a system for your incoming and outgoing paperwork and create a space for it; such as a command center
Today I’m sharing my progress this week in tackling a much needed purge and re-organization of our paper clutter and command center.
And let me tell ya… after the busy past few months, it more then needed it!
Proof that even a good organizing system will fail if the people operating the system don’t follow through.
So the most important part of my goal is about maintaining it; now that it’s back in good working order!
Here is how our command centre was looking before I started this re-organization process:
It had become a drop zone. There was unopened mail, piles of paper clutter to deal with, things to be filed, and the homework bin was overflowing with the kid’s work and papers.
So I started by taking everything out; and I mean everything. I went through it all and recycled or threw out anything that we no longer needed. I then made a pile for “ACT” (action items) and another pile for “FILE”.
I even went through the office supplies and pens and got rid of old, worn out, or unneeded items.
Once everything unnecessary had been purged it was time to put it all back together…
Better, right?!?
Even the kid’s bin is back to manageable!
If you want more details on how I setup our Command Center and what I included in it, I shared all the details on that yesterday! As well as my tips for dealing with paper clutter on Monday:

I feel so much better having this first job dealt with! I’m totally motivated now to keep going and take on the next challenge… the kitchen!!

Your closet command center concept is great. My hallway closet is back to back with the stairs to the basement (high traffic zone) so I only adopted the concept partially. Primarily I needed a drop zone for the mail so it doesn’t sit in a big pile on my kitchen counter, which then makes me terribly unmotivated to cook. I moved a hanging canvas-type multi-shelf organizer that was not well-utilized in another closet to my hallway closet and dedicated a shelf to incoming mail. And voila! No more messy pile of mail on my kitchen counter!! I also purged coats for donations and made room for the vacuum which has never had a good home. Your wonderful idea has improved my family’s quality of life so I wanted to take a moment and thank you for it. While I don’t have the right space to adopt the full, beautiful design you have in your home, it sparked a significant improvement in mine. Thanks so much!
Where did you get the mint colored elements for your command center? It is adorable!!
Hello! I got them from HomeSense, actually, which is usually called HomeGoods in the US. So unfortunately I don’t have a great source where you can order them online…though I have seen some handmade ones through Etsy like this one. Also, quite a few of our desk accessories are Martha Stewart brand and you can get those through Staples. Hope that helps!
I love it! except that am in a very small budget , there is any suggestion ?
Is the filing cabinet a DIY? Can you give details?
I also love the turquoise wall file organizer – chalkboard – with FILE – ACT – STORE. ls that metal and a DIY?
Hi Kris – no, it was not a DIY. I bought it at HomeSense (in the US, it’s called HomeGoods). Hope that helps!
Hi Kris – yes, the filing cabinet is a DIY. You can read about it here: DIY Chalk Painted File Cabinet
Can you tell us where you got the turquoise file cabinet? Was this a DIY? Do tell!

Thank you! I love it when it’s so organized – I just need to be on top of it so that it doesn’t become a “drop and hide” zone!
Where did you get the elements for your command center?
Hi Darcy – I bought most of my at HomeSense (HomeGoods in the US) and Staples (the Martha Stewart line), but tried to find some similar options online for people to choose from. I lucked out with the colours when I was putting mine together!
