A Simple & Beautiful Solution for Covering Up Popcorn Ceilings

So you may have seen that I finally shared our Kitchen Reveal the other day.

Woot woot! We are so thrilled to be finished with it!!

But truth be told, we aren’t actually quite “finished”.

Well, the hubs says we are done but there is one little project that still niggles away at me…

We still need some sort of solution for covering up popcorn ceilings; especially since the movement of the lighting left us with this…

Installing our new kitchen lighting sconces and pendants from build.com at thehappyhousie.com-11

The ceiling!

Not only do we have a textured “popcorn” ceiling throughout our kitchen and the whole house… but we moved some lighting in the kitchen which left us with a bit of a repair job.

You may remember that I talked and talked and talked about wanting a planked ceiling in both the kitchen and dining room. I even wrote a whole big post about it and asked for your feedback.

Should we?

Shouldn’t we?

And almost everyone said “DO IT!”.

But we haven’t done it. At least, not yet.

There is just something a little daunting about the process. I mean, we have installed tons of paneling in our time. Tongue and groove, board and batten, planks and planks. But never to a ceiling. Why is the ceiling so scary? {Maybe because I have visions of all the boards succumbing to gravity and falling down on my head while I am cooking dinner one evening}.

And then Armstrong contacted me about this awesome new line of products they have for ceilings and I just about spit out my matcha.

Because, honestly, I totally get how this guy feels about his popcorn…

Seriously. A crazy, super, easy install system for covering up that horrendous popcorn and giving your space a beautiful planked ceiling instead.

Ahhhhh. I’m drooling. I totally want to try it.

And if white planks aren’t your thing then they have a ton of other design styles available as well – from beautiful Metallaire (TM) ceilings to natural wood planks; modern bamboo planks to coastal white beadboard.

Of course I know I plan to stick pretty close to my white planked roots…

I feel like it looks easy enough to install that I JUST. MIGHT. be able to talk the hubs into it after all.

Wish me luck!

Think you might want to give this a try? Pin it to remember it!

This is awesome! Pin it to remember it!

    1. Doesn’t it?! It looks so much easier to install then tongue and groove- and just imagine how much painting time (and shoulder strain) it would save!!

    1. Hi Cheryl! I think that planking the ceiling is a great solution. I’m hoping that we tackle this project one of these days ourselves:) Good luck with your project!

  1. Ahhhh….this looks so awesome!!! I’ve been wanting to do something like this on the ceiling of our kitchen and family room. Of course I need to wait until we get rid of the drop down ceiling in the kitchen 🙂

    1. Hi Heidi! I’ve been wanting to tackle this for a while too- and now that I see there is an option where they come pre-painted, I’m hoping the hubs will be on board:)

  2. We ended up scraping the popcorn off our entire main floor ceiling and had it skimmed and painted. So much work (and a huge mess), but so worth it. This look like a great option. Can’t wait to see!

    1. Hi Shauna! We have a skylight in the kitchen that our dry waller re-plastered for us while we were renovating the kitchen. I wish we had just gotten the ceilings done before we moved in, because now it seems like such a daunting task. Though, this planked solution from Armstrong seems easier- and you could take it one room at a time!

  3. Krista!! Did you read my mind?? 😉 My husband and I were just talking about this same project last night! I can’t wait to check this out!

    1. Hi Nina! So glad I could help! I love the look of planked ceilings… and definitely dream of doing this one of these days!

    1. I think so Marci- it looks much easier then actually nailing tongue and groove to our ceiling and then painting it all. That whole process feels totally overwhelming!

    1. Oh, Anne! That sounds like a lot to contend with! Maybe if you knocked them down with a broom (or scraper?!) as much as possible, this product might work as you install metal tracks first that the planks attach to.
