Decking Out the Deck for Summer
Im excited to get my deck all ready for summer, with some amazing decor finds!
I’m ready for summer, how about you? We had such fabulous hot weather early in May that it was a major tease… now we are back to cooler temps and spring rain. Despite the lack of heat this past weekend I couldn’t wait to get going on two of my favourite pre-summer tasks, dressing the deck and planting our summer deck flower pots!!
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I will tell this story with pictures… facts about everything you see on the deck can be found at the bottom of the post.
Decking Out the Deck
Furniture:
- All the furniture is six years old this summer. The wood used to be more of a reddish color so last summer I decided to stain it with a brown opaque stain that coordinates well with the colors in the resin wicker furniture that we also have on the deck.
- The wooden benches and chairs are an FSC certified hardwood and are part of a set called Orlando from JYSK… they used to live with our dining table but I have mixed it up a little and am using them for our little seating area instead. We have some resin wicker benches paired with the dining table now.
- The resin side table and coffee table were purchased with the same benches (mentioned above) that are now paired with the dining table. All the resin furniture was purchased on sale at the Real Canadian Superstore a few years ago.
Cushions:
- The blue striped bench cushions were purchased from JYSK at the same time that we originally purchased the patio set six years ago.
- I made the accent cushions last year using the same method that I recently posted about in my simple DIY Envelope Pillow Cover tutorial. The fabric is outdoor rated and was purchased with a coupon two summers ago at Fabricland ( in store). While I am not sure whether these prints are still available, I know that there are many fabulous outdoor fabrics available online through both Fabric.com Outdoor Fabric and Tonic Living Outdoor Fabric. I picked a few coordinating prints from the same line so that they worked well together but still provided some interest and variety.
- The green throw blanket was purchased at a local import market for $20 and the green colour works perfectly with the small green flowers in the floral print cushion fabric. It is perfect for cuddling up with on a cool evening outdoors.
Accessories:
- The rug was a recent purchase at Walmart. I couldn’t believe my luck in finding a rug that coordinates so well with the cushions for a mere $17.88! I was planning to try making my own and have been busy pinning and reading various tutorials, but I thought this one matched perfectly and I honestly couldn’t make one for less money than that.
- The white tray on the coffee table was picked up at a garage sale for $5 and primed/painted white with some indoor/outdoor spray paint. The jute candle lantern was purchased last summer at Home Sense for $12. The two log tea light holders were likely handmade by someone and then bought by me at a garage sale for 1$. I think I will have to try DIYing some more of those soon, they look easy and are so cute! And you may have already read about the little upcycling journey that the colander took in becoming a succulent planter.
Plants:
- The plants in the pots will fill in as spring turns to summer. I chose red and white geraniums for height and then surrounded them with some trailing basket filler plants in yellow, white, and dark purple. I will post some more pictures and information about these as they start to fill in.
- The succulents in the upcycled colander are called Hens and Chicks and the fern is a Boston Fern. I love the bright fresh green that they bring to the seating area.
I will be back soon with some pictures of our dining area on the deck, including a fun, fast, and frugal DIY project involving a peva tablecloth…
What are you doing to get ready for summer? Have you done anything new to your deck or patio? I would love to hear what you’ve been up to!
Thanks for reading!
And remember, my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

Hi Cristina, in the good weather it is really fabulous to have that space. My five year old and I were playing ‘go fish’ out there just this evening and I was sure appreciating it!!
Krista
What a lovely space! Great job.
Thank you!
Hello! What an inviting space. I love it. Can you please give me the name of the area rug from Wal-Mart? I can’t seem to locate it.
Thank you so much! It will look great on the concrete next to our new pool. That’s the atmosphere and feeling that I’m trying to replicate. Thank you again. Great job!!
Hi Amy!! I don’t remember the name now and have thrown out the label. But it was in the summer section with the other outdoor rugs. I am in Canada, so if you are in the US it is possible they might not carry the same ones? The brand is Mainstays – I checked the label on the back of the rug. Maybe you could ask at your local store if they carry outdoor rugs and it might be there? Good luck!! I am sure it would love amazing next to a pool – fun!!
Krista
