DIY Chalk Painted Entry Table

It’s been a while since I worked with chalk paint.

When I first starting blogging I was chalk painting everything. Left. Right. Center.

I almost chalk painted my dog one day.

But then it seemed that I’d managed to paint pretty much every piece of paintable furniture in the house and I ran out of projects to chalk paint for a while.

Luckily, we seem to have somehow accumulated a list of projects, once again, that need a little sprucing up with paint.

And while I think I will likely tackle some of them with regular latex and my sprayer, I’m was pretty excited to roll up my chalk-painting sleeves for this quick and easy makeover.

Maybe you spotted this little DIY Chalk Painted Entry Table last week when I shared my Entry Hall tweaking with DIY Faux Map Wallpaper??

I’ve been wanting to switch up the furniture in the entry hall for a while now. The space was just feeling like it had a little too much furniture – with a long entry table on one side and a chair on the other.

It’s quite a small space and I wanted to keep all the furniture to one side to give it a more open feel.

I found this little table on clearance at a local big box store and I knew it would be the perfect piece for our entry hall because of it’s small size and scale.

It started out in this dark brown stained finish which I felt was too heavy for our space.

And it just felt kind of boring… sort of like I just picked it up on clearance at a big box store. Am I right??

I gave it two coats of Bliss by Country Chic paint…

One of my favourite things about working with chalk paint is how quickly it dries and how quickly you can finish your projects. I only had to wait a couple of hours between coats, so this whole project only took me a few minutes to paint spread over one day – from start to finish.

Once the two coats of Bliss were dry, I top coated it with one coat of Simplicity (white), also by Country Chic Paint.

I let that dry for only a few minutes before using a slightly damp rag to “wet” distress it. You basically just go back over the areas that you want to add distressing too and wipe the paint off before it has had a chance to dry fully (rather then waiting for it all to dry thoroughly and then sanding it off).

The final step is to let the whole piece dry, and then apply wax. I like to use a wax brush to apply it and then buff it off with a clean, dry, lint-free rag – but you can even apply wax with a rag and then buff it off if you don’t own a wax brush. It adds a nice subtle sheen and a protective finish to your piece.

Done!

I love how it fits perfectly in front of the vintage framed chalkboard (do you know I made that from an old oil painting I found at a thrift store?!)

And the chairs 0n either side- a total bonus. I ordered eight chairs for our new dining table but find it more comfortable to keep only 6 (3 per side) at our table for most occasions. Now, with this smaller table, we have the perfect spot  to store the other two in the entry hall.

You can see how I distressed off quite a bit of the Simplicity white in spots. I like the extra texture and character that it gives to the piece. It looks much more interesting then it did to start with, right?

Have you tried chalk paint? Do you love working with it? Or not a fan?

I’ve got quite a few more pieces on the list to paint this spring – and I think at least of few of them will be getting the chalk paint treatment.

    1. Hi Helen, I think you would be fine to use a satin paint – I have used satin before and the finish is great. Once you wax your piece it adds a little sheen, anyhow! Good luck with your project!
