DIY Chevron Hook Rack {for easy closet organizing}

I have to admit something to you.
I am a secret “closet slob”.
I like to keep our house fairly tidy (it just makes me feel better and more in control of my life when things are all in their ‘place’)…
…but everyday I just drop my clothes on the floor in our closet.
And I finally figured out why.

What do you do with clothes that aren’t ready for the wash but you don’t want to put them back in the drawers or hang them back up?
Well… my previous solution was to throw them on the floor.
A logical solution, I know.
And to think, all this time, I just needed some hooks.

To make these hook racks I used:

– two MDF pre-primed boards
– chevron stencil
– a stencil brush (not the foam brush you see pictured – I quickly switched that out for a flat ended stencil brush once I got started)
– two colors of chalk paint (frosty morning and cheesecake)

For this simple project I got to try out some new chalk paint sent to me by Country Chic Paint. It is a brand new company that has created a beautiful chalk paint product that comes in a gorgeous array of colours – and I was excited to get to use some of the little testers they sent me (I have some bigger projects planned using this great product soon – I love working with it and can’t wait to share some more details about it).
I started by giving my MDF boards two coats of the cheesecake color and then used my chevron stencil (I got mine in the craft section of Walmart) to add the blue (frosty morning) chevron detailing.

Once it was thoroughly dry I distressed it by rubbing firmly with only a damp cloth – I was thrilled and amazed to not have to use sandpaper so I could do the whole project in my craft room instead of hauling it out to the freezing garage to sand it down. The paint comes with really clear instructions which was an added bonus.

Next I used a measuring tape to help me evenly space the hooks on the board and predrilled the MDF before screwing the hooks in.

My husband helped me hang them up on the wall- we attached the boards directly into the studs by predrilling holes (see in the picture above) – and used a level to make sure they were nice and straight.

  1. Ooh very cute, Krista! I want to put some hooks like this in our entry because I have the same problem– everything just gets dropped! Thank you for the inspiration! Thanks so much for linking up at Hit Me with Your Best Shot! Hope to see you back tonight!

    1. Hooks are THE BOMB Abby! I can’t even count how many we have now… I am thinking of going to a completely hook based system for my boy’s bedroom closet because who do you think hangs things on hangers? Not the three and six year old, that’s for sure… Thanks for your visit friend!

    1. Hi Ariean! I agree- you could use that back wall for hanging space but it made our closet feel really closed in when we did that… I find the hooks so useful for keeping our stuff from being thrown on the floor. Love it! Thanks so much for your visit and the feature!!

  2. I cannot believe you are a closet slob, you are just so organized, but I love this cute project you made – a little ooomph to something mundane! Another successful project Krista!

    1. Well, a closet slob as in a slob in my closet. I try to be tidy everywhere else but I definitely have a few little areas where I get a little more slobby (and they usually involve closets or drawers…). My closet is finally almost organized and then it is onto the bathroom drawers… they were tidy once but have fallen out of their system somehow (I blame mornings.). Thanks for coming by Vel!

  3. Very nice!! And yep, I do have some super slobby secrets!! 😉 Not telling ! But they have to do with my closet too. 😉 The rest of my house is great…but for some reason, the clothes and the closet are my weak point. ugh. Might have to do with the fact that my “walk in”( that’s laughable) is too small and not laid out well on top of that. Soon to be remedied though! Thanks for sharing your tip …great timing!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. The clothes and the closet are my weak point as well – but I think now that I have gotten it organized it will be much easier to keep it that way! Good luck with your closet project Nancy, can’t wait to see what you come up with (I have a feeling it may involve some paint??).

  4. Haha i throw my clothes on the floor too. What’s worse is when I can’t decide what to wear, and the easiest solution would be to hang back up the items I don’t pick, but no, they must be thrown on the bed in a big pile, then consequently shoved on the floor.
A chevron stencil! The answer to my frustrations with taping chevrons! This turned out so lovely, Krista. Beautiful paint color.

    1. I know the process Amy! Something similar happens at our house fairly often… though I have a shelf in my closet that I used to pile stuff on instead of the bed. It led to quite a pile of ‘lost’ clothing items!!

  5. Umm, did you see my closet slob post earlier this week? TOTALLY a closet slob, and sometimes and all-out-in-the-open slob, too. 🙂 I pile my clothes that are worn, but not ready for the wash, on the top of my dresser in the closet. It’s terrible and looks awful. I should so do this! Thanks for the idea!! 🙂

    1. Hi Laura! I LOVE this project. It seems like such a simple thing – but really has made such a huge difference for me. I would pile my once worn clothes up on a shelf in our closet and it would all get lost in the black hole that was our closet… .not to be seen again for months. So glad to have a system now, it is already working really well!! Hope you are having a great week:)

  6. I love this, Krista! How lovely that the paint distressed so easily! (I hear you on painting in the freezing cold though… when will it be Spring!??!)

    1. Hi Tara!! The garage is definitely too cold to let any paint dry right now- I did some spray painting outside and then had to bring it into my laundry room to dry. Such a nice fresh smell it leaves:) I can’t wait to try a big project with this paint- I have some more arriving Monday. Time to finally tackle my boys’ bedroom project!!

  7. Hi Krista! Love the chevron hook racks. More than that I love that you confessed to being a closet slob. I totally am too, which is weird, because I am kind of OCD about there rest of my house. You have inspired me to organize my closet and create more storage. Maybe that will motivate me to keep it as tidy as the rest of my house 🙂 Have a great week!

    1. I know Tasha- isn’t it weird how there are certain little areas that we can let go of and not others. My closet is definitely one of those spots. But it would kill me to have stuff laying around the rest of the house for long… feels good to have it tidy in there now though. Just gotta get those finishing ‘organizing’ touches in place!

  8. Love your hooks!! And don’t feel bad about just throwing your clothes… I’ve been there! Sometimes I’ll find blouses on my shelves ant I’ll be like, ” oh hey, there you are!”

    1. Lol! I have totally been there Selene! If I didn’t throw it on the floor then it was on my shelf in my closet- and things would get buried and then I would find ‘that shirt’ I had been looking for. Glad I’m not the only one!!

    1. Thanks Christy! I love the hooks- there is a side for me and a side for the hubs. I can’t wait to show you the fun way I came up with to label those baskets (and you won’t believe the deal I got on them!)…

  9. Excellent! I have the same thing in my closet, although I have to admit I simply bought a pre-made rack with hooks, BTW the baskets in the closet are cool too. Blessings! Gabe

  10. Krista, I can’t imagine you being a slob at all, but you made me laugh! I have way more secret-sloppy habits then I can admit and my clothes definitely top that list! This is a great idea and there’s not excuse if you have a rack to hang things up. Love this! Pinned! Thanks for sharing and hope you have a great Tuesday!

    1. Hi Cindy! I totally agree- now there is no excuse (or reason) not to keep my clothes off the floor- and I am thrilled to have a tidy and organized closet after a looooooong time of non-function in there!
