DIY Chevron Spider Art {PLUS a Halloween Project Parade and Blog Hop LINK}
October has arrived… it is foggy and cool here… watching the mist and fog over the lake in the morning is certainly putting me in the mood for Halloween – and to bring a little of that “October” indoors I created this fun chevron spider art inside these thrifted frames.
To make this fun Halloween Art you will need:
- vintage looking frames (or another regular frame would work but give a different look)
- fabric of your choice- a crisp, graphic print probably works best
- plastic spiders and assorted creepy gross insects (I got mine from the dollar store)
- Black spray paint (I used a Flat finish and love the effect)
- Mod Podge and a Brush
- Hot glue gun and glue
I started out with some frames that I picked up at my local Sally Ann for $2 and $1.
Before painting them I gave them a thorough cleaning. I also removed the picture from the small one.
Then I “went to town” with my Flat Black Krylon Spray Paint
(leftover from my DIY Potion Bottles and Spell Books projects).
Once the frames were dry, I took the picture inserts and used them to help me cut my fabric to size:
I then applied a thin coat of Mod Podge onto the pictures and attached my fabric directly to them, smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles. For the smaller pictures I wrapped the fabric around the back of the picture and used some hot glue to secure the fabric at the back.
Then I played around with the placement of my spiders and scorpions until I liked the effect, and secured them for eternity with some hot glue:
I love the yellow and white chevron and how crisp it looks against the black frame and spiders. I couldn’t have all dark, dreary, scary decorations – that just isn’t me!
I love that it looks fun and “Halloween-y” but is still a little cheery and funky all at once…
The graphic look also really compliments my little Hand Sketched Oil Sharpie Pumpkins too…
And I think it ‘funs’ up the spooky DIY Spell Books and Faux Mercury Glass Potion Bottles…
This vignette won’t be permanent… I plan to use these frames on my Halloween mantel when I do that in a few days…. I have a few more thrift stores finds I am working on for the mantel and then I can’t wait to share it with y’all!
I may share this project at some of these housie parties

Hi PJ! I love contrasts in décor- like the fresh modern chevron against the black ornate vintage frame. Think it adds a fun tension and modernizes old pieces. Thanks so much for your kind comments and visit!! And for hosting of course:)

I love this project – The chevrons and the spiders, perfect for Halloween. I had to do a double take, we had those same pictures in our house when I was little. Made me think of my mom, miss her dearly.
Hugs, antonella 🙂
Hi Antonella:) It is amazing how décor items can create such strong memories for us:)

I always love your stuff, Krista, and this project is no exception. Those frames were such a score and I LOVE what you did with them!
Thank you Alexis!! They were a score… I love checking back at the Sally Ann fairly regularly – you never know what you might find! Thanks so much for your visit and sweet comments!
oooo, cool, think it would also be cool with the pic you had in it. 🙂
Hi Joanne! I agree… the picture did kind of suit Halloween already… and I thought about keeping it as ‘was’ but decided I had a lot of heavy feeling accessories already and wanted to brighten things up a little! I guess I could have kept the picture for future use… ah well, hindsight is always 20:20!
Krista. You are so creative, I can’t even handle it. This is adorable. Where do you find the time?!!?
Hi Kelly!! lol – time… I tend to craft in mad busy batches of time and then do nothing for a while… I had a bunch of projects on the go at once and then it takes a while to get to write and share them! Each job is pretty quick and if you have all the supplies out already…. I will say that having our craft room upstairs now on our main floor has been such an awesome thing too!! I am so much more likelier to go in there when I have a few minutes and use them usefully!
Hi, Krista! Thanks so much for the invite! I linked up my printable and a Halloween countdown. And I absolutely LOVE your chevron spider project. So, so cute! Thanks again. Have a wonderful day!
Thanks Brooke!! So thrilled that you came and shared your beautiful stuff!!
That is super cute, Krista!
Thank you Mary!!
This is so great! Love the yellow skeleton hand too.I really want to know how you find the time for all of these projects!
Hi Danielle!! I craft in mad batches – a ton of projects on the go at once and a bit of a disasterous mess… then I work on one project while the other dries… switch etc. I do find having the craft room on our main floor now has made a HUGE difference. I would have never gone to the basement to craft in the evening before- but now I will go in and do something when I have a few minutes or an evening:) Thanks for your super kind comments!!
I love your projects ~ thank you so much for hosting the Halloween Par-Tay!!! Have a great week.
Thank you Mary Beth!! So glad you came!!

Thank you Cindy!! So thrilled you came!!
Krista this looks so easy and turned out perfect.
Thank you Diana – it was super easy and very inexpensive… the frames were $3, I owned the fabric (a leftover) and the spiders and scorpions were $1!
Thank you for hosting, and I love your spider art. What a fun idea!
Thanks Megan!! So thrilled you came to link up your great stuff!!
