DIY Faux Concrete Bowl Succulent Planter

Are you a fan of succulents?

I definitely am!

I’ve done quite a few projects with them; both faux and real. From mini succulent mug gifts to succulents in berry baskets to a PB Knock off succulent planter and a PB Knock off faux succulent wreath.

I love succulents!

Maybe, because, unlike my other house plants, I can’t kill them. And the outdoor ones seem to live and live and live without any care from me.

But whatever the reason, I can’t quite get enough of succulents. And I’ve been eyeing up these lovely, modern concrete succulent planters for a while at various stores and online. But they generally retail for an excessive amount of money… like this one which sells for nearly $168 US! EEK!

A little rich for my blood.

But still, a really pretty piece to have in your home, right?

So, I thought, why not make my own??

To make this I used…

Make It: Fun Crafts® 10″ Round Ball
Make It: Fun Crafts® Smooth Finish
Make It: Fun Crafts® round disc
Flat sheet moss
Succulent and Air Plant Pics {check your local Michaels or JoAnns for sales}
Hand Saw
Spoon
Putty Knife
High Grit Sand Paper – I used 220 grit
Grey Acrylic Craft Paint – I used Martha Stewart Arrowhead

So… funny thing. I started with a 10″ FloraCraft® round ball… I cut it in half with my hand saw, levelled the bottom so it would sit flat, and then scooped it out with a spoon. Only to later discover that you can actually get half-rounds from FloraCraft® that are already carved out. Like a bowl…

Anyhow, once I had the shape I wanted, I used a few coats of my Smooth Finish® to get the styrofoam smooth and paintable. I love this stuff…

I sanded between coats and then again at the end; then gave the whole thing a good coat of grey paint {I used Martha Stewart’s Arrowhead}.

I like the rustic shape and lines of it from the “scooping out” process; I feel like it more closely resembles an actual concrete bowl that way.

Once dry, I covered a FloraCraft Styrofoam disc with some leftover sheet moss (leftover from my Pottery Barn Knock Off succulent wreath project}. I then added in five Air Plants and four little succulent pics, and placed the disc into the “concrete” bowl. I tucked some extra moss around the edges to make sure that none of the styrofoam disc showed through.

I managed to make mine using quite a few materials that I had leftover from other projects, but even if you had to purchase most of these materials new, you would come in significantly lower then the retail price!

And I think it turned out amazingly well. The rustic finish is perfect for a faux concrete bowl, don’t you think?

Now… I just need to figure out the perfect spot in our house for it!

Want to remember this? Give it a try, yourself?

This is awesome! Pin it to remember it!
