DIY Spray Painted Halloween Spell Books {and DIY Faux Mercury Glass Potion Bottles at Uncommon Designs}
Hello and welcome to our haunted house… or perhaps it is Professor Snape’s Potions Class… today I am sharing some quick and easy DIY Spray Painted Halloween Spell Books that are so scary they make it hard to for you to tell where you really are…. bwah ha ha ha haaaaaa
I am also eerily excited to be sharing these DIY Faux Mercury Glass Potion Bottles over at Uncommon Designs… I would love if you hop over there after to visit me!
To make these you need:
-
Old hardcover books
- Flat Black Spray Paint
- Paint Pen in Silver (or colour of your choice)
- Paper Towel (and maybe some painters tape) to protect your book pages from the spray
- A strongly brewed cuppa tea and a foam brush
I started out with these books from the thrift store and some Flat Black Krylon Spray Paint.
I wrapped my book pages with some paper towel to protect them from overspray. If you really are concerned you could probably also tape along the edges closest to the spine to protect them as well.
I gave them a few coats of spray paint, letting one side dry before flipping to spray the other side.
Once dry I used a Silver Paint Pen to write Halloween themed names on the book spines…
you could look up some examples of Halloween themed or decorative fonts in order to get some ideas for your penmanship. You could also practice before hand on some paper, but I was feeling really risky and decided to just free hand it. Wild, I know.
Lastly, I wanted the pages to look aged so I used a tea stain (brew a strong cup of tea and apply it to the edges of the pages with a foam brush).
Now the pages add some authenticity to the image that these old potion books have been sitting in the Hogwarts Library for centuries…
They kind of puffed up as they dried too… making them look more uneven and aged.
A quick, simple project that really adds to any Halloween Vignette…
And don’t forget, you can learn how to conjure up some DIY Potion Bottles today over at Uncommon Designs…

Hey, Krista!
I love these spray-painted spell book! Such a fun idea! I’m writing an article on my blog, Lit & Love, and was hoping to link to your article. Could I use your pictures on my article about Book and Skull decor?
https://litandloveblog.wordpress.com/
Cheers,
Amy
Hi Amy! I am happy to let you use an image with a link back to my blog (or an image each of the books and the skull). Thanks for asking and for sharing these projects!
Krista
Brilliant! I always look at those books that are for sale but the prices usually turn me off. I never thought to paint a book and create it myself! Love the tea stainining idea- perfect!
I know Liz… I wouldn’t pay $10 each for books that will be out a few weeks a year, tops! Much better to make them from $1 Sally Ann finds!! Thank you so much for your visit and comments!
Such a cool idea! I’d love if you’d link up to The DIY’ers! http://homecomingmn.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-diyers-31.html
Thank you Kayla- for the personal invite!!
I am so jealous of your Halloween setup! LOVE those spell books!
Lol Jenna- thanks so much… they were super easy. Haven’t got Halloween set up permanently yet – am looking forward to doing that soon:) Another mantel me thinks?!?
I love how these turned out, Krista! I’m a big Harry Potter fan, and I love your homage to Snape’s potions class! You are always so creative! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!
~Abby =)
Thanks Abby- I am a huge HP fan too… so naturally Halloween stuff starts merging into that whole genre somehow:) Thank you so much for your sweet comments!
eek! So spooky! I love it Krista!
Hope you’ll bring it to the party. I’d love it if you linked it up on the DIY Sunday Showcase today. 🙂
Cheers!
Hi Therese! I saved your party link on bloglovin so I can add it to my list and remember to come next week! Thanks so much for the invite!!
Great idea! I may have to make these myself.
Thanks! They were super easy and will be a super fun mantel prop for Halloween I think! Thank you so much for your visit and comments!
I love this idea! I saw some spooky books of spells and such in the Halloween section at TJMaxx, but they were more than I wanted to spend. This is a perfect way to get them on the cheap…now to find me some old books! Love your vignette too 🙂
Thank you Christy!! I love trying to DIY fun products that I see at décor shops!!
Those are so cute Krista!! I never end up decorating for Halloween, but I love this and it makes me want to =)
Hi Kelly! I haven’t done a ton in the past… just added some crows and owls to my fall décor. This year I am amping it up a little because of my new faux mantel! So excited about that:) Thank you so much for your visit and comments!
