DIY Nautical Chart Art {& my Easy Thrifty Ways to Decorate with Maps}

I love maps… I could spend hours looking at them, trying to figure out exactly where various places are in relation to other places and imagining where I would like to go and visit. Do you ever do that?

Maps and charts have so much character to them. I have used them for all kinds of projects around here from map covered letters to map magnets to this easy DIY map & nautical chart art that I am sharing today.

To create this easy DIY nautical chart art or map art, all you have to do is cut up a map or nautical chart to fit a picture frame. I have done this in a few places in our house, but I think that my favourite so far might be the easy DIY nautical chart art that I created for our boys’ shared bedroom using a red/white/blue chart of the nearby waterways that I purchased from a local fishing store.

All you need for materials are a map or nautical chart, some scissors, tape, and a picture frame. Just determine which part of the map you want to frame, cut it out accordingly, and then tape it to the back of the mat. Done!

I put two of these little chart art pieces on each side of the planked wall in our boys’ room, beside their beds.

    1. Hello! I bought mine at a local fishing store…anywhere that sells fishing and camping equipment would likely be your best source. Good luck!!

  1. I have a copy of an antique nap of area much of the last for generations of family history started and still is being made. It is two sided and have been wondering how best to display. I was thinking frame but I’d only have one side visible. While looking at yours I suddenly thought “make a two sided frame and hang by ribbon”, then it could hang on display but could be flipped to see other side. Thanks for your inspiration.

  2. Hi Kirista – I too am a map lover. My family says I don’t need them since they think my brain has a natural GPS in it. I think I love maps mostly because they are colorful pieces of art. They are visual and since I am a visual learner – maps were easy to understand. I always got an A in Geography. Can’t say the same about math and science 🙂 Love all your ideas.
