Easy Gold Polka Dot Drop Cloth Table Runner

I will show you how to make an easy gold polka dotted table runner@

If you saw my guest post on Tatertots and Jello the other day, you may have noticed the super easy gold polka dot table runner below the white and gold herringbone pots on our table… it was a super thrifty project that adds some fun character to our spring table setting for about $4 (or less!).

To make this table runner I used:

The supplies laid out on the table for the runner.

– a piece of drop cloth (about 18″ wide by about 80″ in length)
– gold craft paint, a small brush and a dish for the paint
– fabric scissors and an iron (not pictured)

I started by cutting the drop cloth to the correct width and length…Cutting the drop cloth.

I just cut a small way into the drop cloth and then tore straight down the fabric leaving a rough edge.

Tearing the rest of the drop cloth.

You could always iron the edges and sew a neat edge but I was happy to keep the rustic look of the torn edge- I removed any extra bits and pieces of thread and laid it along the table to make sure it was the right size. Then I gave it a quick iron to get rid of the most set-in wrinkles.

Ironing the cloth.

Lastly, I laid it out along the table and then started adding gold polka dots using my craft paint and a small brush. I kept the gold polka dots random in size and in their spread.

Painting on the polka dots.

Done! It is not going to be washer-and-dryer proof but I don’t plan to actually use it to serve food on. If you wanted it to be more durable then you might want to treat it with a finishing coat (perhaps a coat of mod podge or something similar to help ‘set it’ and protect the paint from vigorous wiping).

Wasn’t that easy? I love DIY projects that take only a few minutes and cost next to nothing…

I like how it pulls in the gold from the white and gold herringbone pots… and how the gold contrasts with the rustic board along the table… Sort of a rustic glam spring tablescape…

Have you been adding any gold touches to your décor? How about using drop cloth for projects? This one drop cloth has already been used to make two table runners and a few pillows- I figure that I used less then $4 worth of drop cloth, and I already owned the gold craft paint. Not bad for a new springy table runner, eh?

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

  1. This is such an eye-catching table runner! I just wanted to let you know that I will be linking to this post on 4/2 at Simply Creative Living if you don’t mind.

  2. If you use fabric medium and do what’s required then the paint will last. I like to use small foam dabber(s) for more uniform polka dots, my hands are not reliable, too shaky. Whatever works huh? I love the rough edge like you did yours, I tear my fabric often, much straighter and uniform lines for me anyway. When I try to cut the lines are all over the place, not pretty. The gold polka dots are very pretty and in vogue now also. We don’t have a dining table but I make table runners to sell and to use on my coffee table and portable island. Hope it’s Spring where you are.

    1. That is a GREAT tip about the foam dobbers – and I will have to look for fabric medium next time I am at Michaels!! Thanks JaneEllen!! It is definitely spring around here- TONS of rain!!!

    1. Thanks so much Selene!! You can do that with a lot of types of fabrics, especially heavier weight ones.

    1. Thanks Nancy- the gold is growing on my too- I guess it is seeing so many beautiful projects in gold. I never thought I would be converted but I find it is happening!! Lol

  3. Love the rustic glam vibe! Here’s a hint I learned in a fabric arts class. Most painted fabric can be “set” (made washable and dryable) with heat. Try pressing with a hot iron (no steam) on the wrong side of the painted fabric for 30 seconds to a minute. Use a press cloth to avoid scorching the fabric and put paper or a piece of scrap fabric under it to keep the paint from transferring to your ironing board cover. Try it if you want to be able to wash something you have created with paint.

    1. Thank you Katie!! Now to spring-ify the rest of the living/dining room. I am ready for a lighter look!

    1. Thank you Mary!! It really was wonderful… and now it really feels like spring is on it’s way around here:) I’m so excited for it!

    1. Thanks so much Ashley!! They I like the extra bit of height and presence the plank of wood gives things… less likely to get knocked over by my boys during dinner time:)

    1. Hi Anne! It would look cute multicolored (I tested that out first but then decided to stick with the gold only for now – I plan to have lots of other hits of color!). So glad you came by:)
