Easy Ikea Lamp Hack with Burlap and Ribbon

On a recent visit to see some of our favourite long distance friends I had the chance to do a little hack (or lampshade revamp) on a pretty little Ikea lamp. Easy Ikea Lamp Hack with Ikea Jonsbo Gryby Table Lamp at thehappyhousie

Our friends have a beautiful big home with a newly redone living room. Erin had chosen this lamp while on a recent shopping trip to Ikea but was feeling that it was lacking a little in the excitement department. We started out with the Jonsbo Gryby lamp from Ikea.

Gathering my supplies:

lampshades

ribbon – I chose a 2″ burlap ribbon, a 1/2″ green ribbon, and 1/2 inch white ribbon – all from Walmart

glue gun and glue sticks

Gettin’ crafty:

I started by playing around with the ribbon design until Erin and I liked it:

I didn’t want to use glue all the way around – so that if she changes her colour scheme or gets tired of this look in a few years she can more easily remove the ribbon and do something different with the lamp shade.

The trickiest to work with was the burlap. After attaching it to the shade (using dots of glue at the back seam only) you can see it flares out because the shade tapers in slightly towards the top:

To solve this issue I cut little slices just out from the seam on each side, pulled the top of the ribbon as tightly as I could, and folded it in and glued it down again (creating a little ‘dart’).

I then added the other two ribbons in the design we decided upon- again only using some glue gun glue at the back seam. The back looks slightly rough but will be hidden against the wall.

From the front and the sides the ribbon looks smooth and pretty…

I love the texture of the burlap. Adding just a bit of ribbon and a few colorful flowers gave a whole new look to this corner of Erin’s living room in a matter of minutes!

I think that Erin was pretty thrilled with the results! At least I hope she was:)  I know I certainly loved it! Isn’t it thrilling when you are visiting friends and they encourage you to unleash your creativity upon their home? Or is that just me…

  1. Love how it turned out. It’s amazing how such a small detail can make such a big difference. And I love that shade of green which looks even better in combination with the flowers.
You are right, it’s also great to be able to change the design when you get tired of it. I redecorated an Ikea lamp twice and now I’m onto my third project 🙂

  3. Love your lamp. It looks so great with the ribbon attached! I am in the midst of finding a lamp for one of my guest rooms. Thanks for visiting me on FB.

  4. I saw this thumbnail at the Weekend wrap up link party and I knew it was yours! Your style is totally identifiable and I love it.

    1. Thank you PJ! So funny that you recognized it right away as mine. Hmm… does that mean I need to step out of my style comfort zone? LOL!

    1. That is a great thought Katie! It would make an adorable table runner… or even some stripes of ribbon on a burlap pillow. Now you have me thinking!

  5. So great looking, what a huge difference in how the whole lamp looks now, I’ve got to try that.
I was thinking I could pucker up the overage at even spots at top of burlap ribbon and maybe glue on a button or a sticker of some kind? I have 2 1/2 ” burlap ribbon gotten at Hobby Lobby, different maker. I’ll be in there digging in my ribbon stash. Great, inspiring project. Sure glad you shared this and your friend got her shades much improved. Fun to have your talents appreciated. Happy days

    1. I was thinking the same thing… about puckering it in a few spots, but didn’t want to commit to more glue on the lampshade in case she changed her mind. Otherwise that would probably be the way to go!

  6. I love this idea! My living room lamp shade could definitely use this! Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog. I look forward to following you!

  7. 🙂 I’m sure that corner of their living room felt different after you made their lampshade so pretty Krista 🙂 I love decorating with burlap and ribbon and the green for summer is a great idea for summer! I really like it 🙂

  8. Perfect hack. From blah to beautiful in only a few steps. I like how you handled that pesky burlap at the seam. Well done. I bet your friend adores her “new” lamp!

    1. Thank you Bronwyn! I hope she adores it… it is a little tough to go back now:) But not too tough with only using glue at the back! (I wanted to leave her an exit strategy in case she secretly didn’t like my work:)

  9. That just couldn’t be any cuter! It’s so fresh. Love that shade of green you used. Man, burlap just makes everything better :))) Off to pin! Thanks for stopping by the hollow today, and for your sweet comments. Shannon

    1. Hi Shannon! I totally agree! Burlap does make everything better… I just saw some thicker rolls of it at Michaels yesterday (maybe 8″ wide ribbon)… I definitely need to get some soon! Thank you so much for your return visit and sweet comments!! I love your blog:)

  10. I agree with Tanya – a small change having a big impact. I like your little glue-gun. I am going to buy one (I am yet to own a glue-gun – gasp!) and I wondered whether the little guns were just as good as the “big guns”! My mum has a couple of little lampshades similar to your friend’s one that I’m dying to “renovate”!!!

    1. Hi Petra! I do use my glue gun all the time – it was a pretty inexpensive one from either Walmart of Canadian Tire, can’t remember. Not the best quality but it seems to do the trick most of the time! Once in a while I have to break out some gorilla glue for heavier projects… but my little glue gun usually suffices. It is definitely a worthwhile buy!
