Fall-ifying the Living Room

With fall right around the corner I decided it was time to bring fall decor into my living room!

We have had the worst weather that I can ever remember having in a September before… so much rain it is unbelievable!! Although it isn’t my favourite weather (go figure, living in the Pacific Northwest), it does put me in the mood for infusing our home with warm and cozy fall touches… and drinking tea by a crackling fire. Too bad my faux mantel doesn’t actually produce any heat. Nonetheless I’ve been busy the past few weeks gradually adding little fall touches to our living room (as well as other areas of our home).  I can’t wait to show you some of the seasonal changes since you last may have seen our living room during our spring/summer house tour.

Fall Living Room Decor Ideas poster.

Some pretty simple decor changes really make a big difference. I started by sewing some new black and white chevron pillows following my super crazy easy fast one piece pillow-cover method… I will do a tutorial on how I created the center burlap/floral strip pillow soon. My simple no-sew burlap embellished pillows have found a home in here as well.

Pillows on the couch that are in a chevron pattern.

I changed the captivating gallery wall slightly by subbing in an oil painting in more fall-ish tones (another garage sale purchase updated with some white paint as I did with my other living room oil paintings). The bright springy painting that used to live above the couch found a new home for the season and a more subtle vintage window frame was brought in from the shed and given a good thorough cleaning. A simple bunting (made using this basic method minus the faux chalkboard paper) and some white wooden lettering give it a fall edge.

A gallery wall above the couch with a picture that says FALL plus oars and scenery pictures.

You may have also seen these DIY Hand Sketched Oil Sharpie Pumpkins already… they have found a home on our living room coffee table in a big hand carved bowl that I picked up at a garage sale for $2!

DIY sharpie pumpkins are in a wooden tray on the coffee table.

On top of my DIY chalk painted yellow side table is my thrifted upcycled lamp – changed up for the season with a little printed burlap ribbon wrapped around it. I love the blackbird pattern and think it (along with the black ad white chevron) will transition really nicely into Halloween décor.

A small white lamp wrapped in a burlap printed with black birds sitting on the side table.

Beside the lamp sit a friendly little blue owl (Bahama Sea spray paint anyone??) and some gold crackle pumpkins that I shared a few weeks ago over at Twelve 0 Eight.

Gold crackle pumpkins and an owl are on the table beside the lamp.

Still lots of bright light coming into the room when the dark gloomy rains break off for a moment or two…

There is a large window in the living room and two armchairs are beside the window.

I added a little fall feel to the corner with a mix of bright orange, blue, and white on this little coffee table (actually a vintage cheese drum)… I love the way these harmonious colours work together.  This is probably my favourite little vignette in the room…

A white armchair is beside the window with a small table beside it.

There is a white and a blue porcelain vase on the table beside the armchair.

Or maybe it is this one…with the red, orange and yellow leaves!

Two blue vases with leaves in them, plus a wooden basket filled with apples on the table.

A wooden crate basket filled with red apples.

Hmmm it is hard to decide.

A white armchair is in the corner of the room with a flowery pillow on it.

It might even be this one…

A blue lamp and white pumpkin is on a side table in the living room.

But I guess nothing says fall like the onset of football season… or perhaps it is hockey if you are a fellow Canadian:)

Lakeshore Cottages sign is above the TV console in the living room.

I guess now that things finally feel ready for the fall season around here it is time to start thinking about Halloween – but because we have Thanksgiving here in mid-October I won’t be adding too many Halloween-ish touches until after that.

What have you been doing to decorate for fall around your house? Do you like traditional fall colours? Or are you happy to mix in some less traditional tones like blues, greens, or yellow?

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

    1. Hi Sara!! It has orange with yellow, blue, and black – it is a print by Waverly called Pom Pom Play Confetti. I bought my fabric from Fabric.com and made the pillow using a simple envelope style (for which I have a super easy tutorial).

loving your blog and am following along via bloglovin. hope you can come by and say hi and visit me sometime.
    🙂

    1. Oh, Southern California… lucky girl! I could use a few more sunshine hours per year:) A little vitamin d deprived up here! But I can see it would make it hard to get into the ‘seasons’ for decorating when you aren’t really living through the season!! So great to meet you Kendra, I will come by for a visit!

  9. Being a blue lover myself, I am loving the oranges with the blues. There is great balance and texture in your living room. LOVE IT. Pinned 🙂

  11. Beautiful Kirsta! Love the pumpkins the most! Subtle but perfect! I don’t decorate for Fall, just Halloween because of the kiddos and takes up all my time already for that! hahaha!

    1. Ya, we have a long fall around here so I have done some early fall, then after (Canadian) Thanksgiving I will do Halloween – then late fall for a while before Christmas. Busy season!!LOL. My boys are a bit young for the ‘scary’ décor yet:)

  12. Wow, lots of color here! I love it! Your room is very cheerful. Your gallery wall looks great- you have an artistic eye! I imagine your wet weather is headed my way.

    1. Yes, colour is kinda the thing around here. I like the white added to the gallery wall now, makes it feel a little more subtle for fall. Thanks for your super sweet comments!!

  13. Krista, the little details you’ve placed around the room are just so pretty 🙂 What’s that little cube thing underneath the yellow coffee table?

    1. Hi Petra! You have such a good eye… that is actually a little basket with a rolled up blanket in it… for extra chilly evenings? Actually the blanket sheds a lot more ‘hair’ then I expected when I bought it so it mostly ends up living under there in the basket:) Lol!

  14. it’s gorgeous, you added beautiful touches to your living room Krista! love the pops of color (orange; bright and fun) 🙂 I already started adding fun touches of Halloween, I just couldn’t wait hi!hi! 🙂

    1. Hi Ingrid! I know… I don’t think I am going to make it until after Thanksgiving to start adding HAlloween – it seems so late this year!!

    1. Thank you Sheala! I love that wood lamp too… would you believe I got it at a garage sale for $6… I loved the cool wood grain/colour so much that I didn’t even paint it (quite a feat for me!)…. thanks so much for your visit and comments!!

  15. Oh my! I love all of your fall updates. I’m totally in love with your decorating skill and style. So in love that I put you on my “Crushing Big Time” post today.

  16. Love all your fall touches Krista! Esp how you made them fit in with your colorful decor – who knew turquoise could be a fall color?? Well now it is 🙂 I’m loving that burlap ribbon around your lampshade!! I just did a little blackbird/crow project that will be up tomorrow. One question…how do you adhere your wood letters to your wall??
    Cindy @ Diy beautify

    1. I love the way the different shades of turquoise work with the orange/red/yellow of fall…. I attached the wood letters to the glass of the old window frame using some double sided adhesive tape (the thick stuff)… there is glass there so I didn’t have to worry about damaging the wall. Otherwise if it was the wall I likely would have used a command strip for each.

  17. So fun!
Okay, I think my fave is the yellow tv stand, then the green and white chevron rug, then the oars. I’ll stop at three. Everything is so wonderful. Happy.
I’m sure your family loves the home you create,
    Deb

    1. Thanks Deb – those must be my favourites too because they are the things that I don’t seem to change!! Though unfortunately my dog is doing a bit of a number on the rug so we will see how long it lasts:(

    1. Oh my goodness Heather, I do not remember a September with weather this bad. The lake here has come up several feet in only a few days. Crazy!!
