Finishing Off the Front Porch with a Vintage Paddle Address Sign

Today I am so excited to share with you a recent addition to our front porch: an address (or house number) sign made out of a vintage paddle.

I started with a great vintage wooden paddle I found at a thrift shop. Now I know that some people would rather leave this in it’s natural wood, but it was covered with marks and scratches and bits of paint so it definitely needed a little refurbishment. I love the rounded shape of the top because it is so different in shape than the many old ‘oars’ that we have hung in the house. (I had to google the difference between paddles and oars to make sure that I was using the terms correctly!).

So after a quick cleaning I gave the paddle a few coats of my new favourite spray paint colour, Bahama Sea.

Then I let it dry for a day or two to allow the paint to cure a little before taping off an arrow design near the top of the paddle.

Since I wanted my ‘arrows’ to be thinner then the width of my green painters tape, I used some masking tape to help me with the spacing.

All taped up and ready… in order to protect the bottom half of the paddle from the white overspray I covered it with the drop cloth before painting.

After some recent bad experiences with spray paint overspray I was very responsible and took my paddle to the edge of the yard, away from all important things like vehicles, before giving the arrows a couple of coats of white spray paint.

I let the white arrows cure for a day, then peeled off the tape and used my hot glue gun to attach some iron house numbers. I know that I could have attached them with screws, and I still may need to if the glue doesn’t hold… but so far so good, and the glue is less damaging when if I ever change my mind about what I want to do with this fab little paddle.

I love it hanging on the wall of our mini-porch at our front entrance… we have a larger set of address numbers on a rock by the driveway, so this paddle is more for decoration then out of necessity.

Cute? I love the arrows! I think I need to use that design somewhere else… and I know that Bahama Sea spray paint will be making several more appearances as well.

I love the way the blue mixes with the pink and blue on the other side of the porch as well…

And the Bahama Sea almost perfectly matches the front door colour… which is Aegean Teal by Benjamin Moore.

  1. How tall and wide is your board? I’m using wood letters about the size of your letters. What size board would I need?

  2. How many coats do you apply for this cute front porch, Krista? I afraid if only 1 coat, it will be easy to be rusty in a short time. Anyway, such a great post.

  3. I find your idea of using an oar for a house number to be very creative. I’m just wondering how where you able to hang the oar on the vinyl siding without nailing or screwing it.

  4. I love this & because I live on a lake this would be perfect for our little house! Where did you get your iron numbers?

  6. What an inviting front porch, have you noticed having trouble getting anyone to come inside?! Love the paddle house number sign. Gives me inspiration to finish mine. Thanks for the great tutorial!!

    1. LOL – thanks Michele! I can’t wait to share how I have changed our porch up for fall… but of course the paddle remains. Thank you so much for your visit and comments!

  7. Hi! I want to make our new front door blue like yours. Did you paint the inside of the door the same color or is it white or stained? New to colorful doors! Help please… Thank you.

    1. Hi Larissa, I only painted the outside of the door. For a long time I toyed with doing the inside because I love an interior painted door- but I haven’t done that yet. It is just plain white – painted white to freshen it up from that primed/metal door look. I still may paint the inside one of these days – but for now it is just the outside. The colour is Aegean Teal by Benjamin Moore. Best of luck!

  8. Happy happy happy! What a great project! And I hadn’t seen Bahama Sea paint color yet! I apparently don’t make it to the paint aisle enough right now!

    1. Hi Amber! I think it might be out of stock now because my husband bought the last two cans in the store and they were on clearance… so sad. I will have to be careful with my use of it and not waste it! Thanks for hosting:)

  9. I love your little porch! The oar house number, your chalkboard… all of it! I have a teensy-tiny front porch so no room for a bench but I do have room for a cool house number and chalkboard!!

    Tania

    1. Thank you Tania! I barely fit the bench on there but managed to squeeze it in… it is pretty small too. But there is always some space on the ‘walls’. Thanks for your kind comments!

    1. Thank you Chelsea! It is crazy to me how the new spray paint colour so closely matches our front door colour too. Decorating fate I guess!

    1. Hi Jamie! I have been going through quite the supply of Krylon this summer… I used to be so scared to spray paint because of drips but am now loving it! Just takes practice I guess:)

    1. Thank you Bronwyn! The arrows weren’t originally meant to be chevron but I guess they really are… I love the way they look though too!

    1. Hi Cheryl! I have found several unexpected things that needed a little touch up with bahama sea now that I have it:) Thanks so much for your super kind comments – totally makes my day!! Have a fabulous weekend:)

  13. Krista, you have inspired me to paint again! Thank you….I’m going with Krylon, Blue Ocean. Is the bench painted with Bahama Sea?

    1. Hi Diana! I have seen Blue Ocean before on projects online- a lovely colour. Haven’t found it in person yet though. The bench is actually a combination of some leftover interior paint colours… not even primed over top of old pine. I think I used leftover nursery paint from my almost-six year olds room to paint it!! Sorry, wish I could be of more help:) So far just the oar is bahama sea but it almost perfectly matches the door, which is Aegean Teal by Benjamin Moore.
      Krista

  14. It’s really cute! I agree with painting it – especially your “signature colour”! I could only hope to find something cool like that on my travels!!!

    1. Hi Petra!
Glad you agree with the paint job… it had a neat look before (I haven’t seen many oars with the rounded end like that)… but I think the chevron improved it. You just never know what you might find when you go thrifting! Have a great weekend:)
