How to Make Your Own DIY Grommet Topped Blackout Drapes

Summer is an amazing time of year. Long sunny days… beautiful sunrises.

But early sunrises, too. At least, early by our winter standards.

So if you don’t love being woken with the sun at 5am, then perhaps some drapery is in order. Like these DIY Grommet Topped Blackout drapes that I made using some gorgeous White Irish Linen.

To make these blackout drapery panels, I used the same basic process as I recently shared with my Easy Lined Drapery Panels. For my best tips on measuring and cutting your fabric, I recommend giving it a read over.

The difference with these panels is that I used blackout liner instead of regular liner, like I used with my other drapery panels. I also added grommets to the top using some special grommet tape and these gold matte drapery grommets. The best part of these panels is that they are WHITE! WHITE blackout lined drapes! How fabulous is that?! I absolutely LOVE the gorgeous White Irish Linen that I used.

After cutting my fabric (as per the instructions in my Easy DIY Lined Drapery Tutorial) I decided where down from the top I wanted my grommets to be placed (keeping in mind the hem that would be created once I sewed the liner together with the white linen fabric. You can see below where I decided to place my grommet tape. I simple pinned it and then stitched it in place along the inside layer of my blackout lining fabric.

Once the grommet tape was sewn on, I placed both the lining and the white linen fabric down on the floor with the grommet tape facing up.

This is where you sew the two fabric pieces (lining and linen) together.  Keep in mind: the idea is that you are making a giant pillow case. Once sewn, you will flip the pillow case inside out, so that the edges that are facing in while you pin and sew will become the OUTSIDE FACE of the drapery panels.

Make sure that you have the GOOD side of your fabric facing in along with the GOOD side of the lining (that doesn’t show the grommet tape).

Then pin along the length of the two fabrics and sew…

Remember: when you flip the sewn together fabric inside out, you should have the “GOOD” side of your drapery fabric facing out, as well as the GOOD side of the lining (the grommet tape should not be seen – it is hidden inside the drapery panel).

Now it is time to outline and cut out the fabric/lining so that you can install the grommets:

Now for the slightly tricky finishing part:   You are cutting through the fabric very carefully to create a hole slightly smaller then the metal rings on the grommet tape that is sandwiched inside your panel. See image above.

Once you have the hole cut, use two of the decorative metal grommets: place one on each side of the internal grommet tape ring and push or “clip” them together. If there is too much fabric in the way then you won’t be able to do it- but be careful. If you cut too large of a circle then the decorative grommet pieces won’t cover the edges completely – which is what you want. You don’t want frayed edges of fabric peaking out from under your grommet tape rings.

I’m not 100% if this is exactly how the grommet ring tape was meant to be used, but this is how I used it. I really didn’t want to see a large strip of grommet tape on the outside of my drapery panel, and by hiding it inside the lined panel and using the decorative metal rings on the outside, it worked perfectly. I have beautiful, clean outsides on both sides of the drapery panels, and the grommets are attached securely inside.

Done!

Well, not quite. Next come the final hem: use the same method to hem the bottom as I did with my Easy DIY Lined Drapery Panels: simply ironing both edges in and then stitching along the bottom through both pieces of fabric.

  1. I was just looking up blackout drape projects and came across your post on Pinterest. I have the fabric, blackout and the grommets but I didn’t even know that grommet tape existed. What does it do for the project? Do I need it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sam

  2. Curious. The grommet tape is created to be sewn on ghe back side of the lined draperies, I thought, so the metal rings sandwich the fabrics together. I’m not sure how it works if it is inside the fabrics and still have the lining secured in the rings. Could you please explain this. Thank you.

    1. Hi Catherine- good question. I edited my post to better explain that! Thanks for asking:)

  3. That view!! I do understand that you also require sleep, so its awesome that you were able to make such pretty blackout drapes! Your room looks so restful. 🙂
