Fresh & Fab Family Room: How to Measure & Tape a Painted Greek Key Accent Wall

When I was a little girl I had a bit of an unusual hobby.

One of my favourite things to play with was a book of graph paper.

I would spend hours designing things in my book. Mainly floor plans for houses. Room layouts. That sort of thing…

It likely stemmed from the fact that we were planning to build a new family home and I loved poring over house plan books and examining the detailed blueprints that my Mom and Dad had purchased for our future home build.

And you know what? I still love designing things on graph paper. The old fashioned way.

Using a pencil, an eraser, and a ruler.

So, guess where I started when it came time to design a fabulous accent wall for our basement as part of the FrogTape Paintover Challenge?

You got it! Graph Paper!

And today I’m sharing all the details on the designs I chose for our basement walls, as well as the method I used for how to measure and tape a painted greek key accent wall using FrogTape Yellow for Delicate Surfaces.

If you didn’t see last week’s post, I shared my “before” pictures and inspiration for a major basement makeover that we are tackling as part of the FrogTape Paintover Challenge.

FrogTape has challenged six bloggers to makeover a room in their homes using paint and FrogTape as part of this challenge, and I am ridiculously excited about this project!

We started out by painting all the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White…

Once the walls had two coats of white paint, I prepared to start my design by measuring and then planning my design on my beloved graph paper.

This might be the most important step.

Since your space will be a different size then mine, you want to take the time to figure out what the relevant measurements will be for your space and using graph paper is the perfect way to make sure you design it correctly.

{Please note: I am taping the outsides of this pattern and painting inside of it. The wall background is already white, and for this “how to” I’m talking about how I taped out the pattern so I could paint the walls inside of the FrogTape.}

I gathered my materials for my first pattern – a giant greek key design that would be the backdrop to our TV cabinet. I used the FrogTape Yellow tape for Delicate Surfaces because I had only finished painting the walls white a couple of days previous. I also used a long level, a pencil and eraser, and a tape measure.

My husband and I worked together to start the pattern by making sure we had a level line along the edge of the wall from which to measure from.

I measured the large outer box first, and marked my way along the way using small pencil marks. I then connected these marks using the FrogTape yellow delicate surface painters tape.

Once the large box was marked and taped, I started on the inner greek key design. I tacked my design up to the wall so that I could easily see where I needed to go next.

Once I got to the square part of the greek key design, I used a square of paper that I had cut out to help  me measure and mark the larger and smaller square shapes…

Once the smaller square was taped, I used a ruler and an exacto knife to gently score the tape to create a perfectly straight taped square.

Then I was ready to go!

I also wanted to create an irregular striped design on the walls in the alcove area (where we used to house the futon).

This design was easier to measure and tape as I just measured an equal distance down from the ceiling all the way along, marking every few feet as I went. I then connected the marks using the FrogTape yellow Delicate Surfaces Painters Tape.

I added a few pieces of FrogTape in the sections that I wanted to leave white so that I wouldn’t inadvertently paint them in a momentary lapse.

Think you might want to give it a try on a wall in your home?

This is awesome! Pin it to remember it!

Whew! All that planning and graphing and measuring and taping was a lot of work; and now I can’t wait to see how it looks once it’s painted and the tape is removed. I will share all those details next week!

In the meantime, you can check out what my fellow FrogTape Paintover Challengers are up to this week on their room makeover projects:
