Our Summer Deck Makeover Reveal

This summer has been a little bit crazy. It feels like it has been a loooooooong time since I have had the chance to share an actual space from our home with you. Perhaps the last time was our Summer House Tour back in June?

I meant to share our deck makeover with you looooong ago – and then somehow this whole project of completely renovating another house has gotten in the way of my timeline. I can’t believe we are already half-way through July!

Well, without further ado, here is our summer deck makeover reveal…

Come and tour this beautiful lake front summer deck and get awesome inspiration for dressing up your own outdoor space

Our deck has changed quite a bit this year- in fact, we invested in a major new piece for the deck at the end of last season. Our GIANT outdoor sofa. I. LOVE. IT. We got it on clearance- obviously the reason for the “end of season” timing, so we didn’t get a lot of time to enjoy it last summer. We bought it to replace the old wooden set of benches that we had on our deck last year. Did you ever see that space?

It was fun and bright and cheery and full of thrifted finds, but I have to admit that the furnishings weren’t as comfortable as we wanted. The benches were originally intended as part of a outdoor dining set and were a little more “upright” and a lot less cushy then you want if you are looking for a true lounging space. Although I loved our deck space last year, I find that we are actually USING our deck a lot more this year with the investment in our new outdoor sofa…

We absolutely LOVE IT! We have spent so many more mornings out there having coffee and so many more evenings lounging and visiting outside instead of retreating to the living room couches. Who knew?!

Some of the cushions are the same as last years – I kept my yellow chevron and the dark blue geometric greek key pattern cushions. But I whipped up a few new floral pattern DIY Envelope Pillows in this gorgeous turquoise print I found at my local Fabricland.

Of course the best part of spending time on our deck is this amazing view that we are so blessed to have from our “backyard”…

We also upgraded our outdoor eating table and chairs this year.

I am completely in love with this square table and chairs/benches that we picked up at Ikea. We found them on a recent trip there (it is a few hours and a ferry ride away from where we live). We had gone to buy countertops and other materials for the big house renovation that we have going on right now – and somehow managed to fit in the outdoor dining set and chairs as well. Praise to the Sienna minivan!

They table and chairs were such an amazing prize that we couldn’t pass them up. We sold our other set through an online garage sale.

They look like Teak but aren’t really, so we will need to store them undercover for the winter to keep them in good condition. We also used a couple of the same benches as our coffee table in the couch/lounging area as well.

The big windows that were added to the house during our kitchen renovation take up most of the upper wall space on the deck now. We added this old window frame mirror to the leftover bit of wall, to reflect back the view of the lake, and the vintage waterski was picked up at a second hand store. It has been living in our garage for a while, waiting for the right space to use it.

We also picked up this cute this BBQ cart at Ikea, but I am using it instead as a bit of a display area. It would also make a perfect outdoor drink station or buffet for gatherings or parties.

Do you remember my post about making this DIY Pallet Anchor Sign? I love how it is such a strong, crisp, graphic shape that it is even recognizable from down on the dock!

Because we are out of our house a fair bit this summer and renovating the other house, I didn’t want to go crazy with a lot of high maintenance annual flowers. Instead I kept it pretty simple with ferns and succulents, just to add some fresh greenery.

And here is my husbands favourite spot to relax after work in the evening… the Papasan Chair that I made over with a new DIY Papsan Chair Cover. I will be sharing how I made the matching outdoor Pouf really soon as well.

  1. Krista, you are one talented lady. I’m loving your blog, so please keep up the great design/DIY work and spectacular photography.
    AMAZING DECK!!!!

  2. Wow, your deck looks so inviting. That million dollar view is stunning!
i’d never leave that spot. Hello from Ontario.

  3. This was a lovely post to read, here in Scotland the temperature is 15 degrees, very grey and raining (heavily), so it was lovely to see such beautiful skies where you are. What a stunning deck you have, thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Hello Lucie! I am glad you found some inspiration! I am currently reading the Outlander series so I have some very romantic notions of Scotland these days:) Would love to visit there one day!

      1. Hi Krista

I am very lucky that I live very near most of the locations where Outlander is filmed, but what I would give for some blue skies and heat! Love your blog, keep up the good work.x

      2. Thanks Lucie! My husband is of half Scottish descent (his grandfather was born there) so one day we would love to take our boys and visit. We have a lot of rain and fog here in the winter but are very lucky to generally have quite beautiful summers. And heat, yes! We live in a valley and the heat can really settle in- we often have a couple of weeks in the mid 30s every summer. But high 20s are generally the standard and much more comfortable to live with.

  4. As an ex-WestCoastGirl….I was soaking up that view but then I spotted that DIY papasan cover and now I am off to read more there, I’m following you now 🙂

    1. Hi Dharma! Great to “meet” you!! Ex-West Coast, huh? Something special must have drawn you away:)

      1. Living and loving the on Lake Erie now. The “something special” was Greg 😉 We met in Vancouver but he is a Niagara-born guy. I have been here, bringing the West-Coast groove to my own corner of Ontario, for 17 years now. I miss those mountains….and I don’t think I will ever get the salt air out of my hair. Nice to meet you too!

      2. I have always wanted to visit Ontario and see those Great Lakes for myself! Maybe one summer we will make it out that way – it would be amazing to see the fall colours there too, from what I hear:)

  5. Can I come visit? Because your deck looks so comfy and welcoming! Seriously, you wouldn’t even know I was there, just leave me out on the deck and I’d be a happy camper 🙂 Thanks for sharing, this is excellent inspiration for the plans I’m dreaming up for our patio.

    1. Hi Emily! Come on by – I am sure you could pass many a happy hour out there! Glad you found a little inspiration:) Thanks for your visit!!

    1. Thank you so much Corinna! I just love how much more comfortable it is to sit out there this year:)

  6. Oh my Krista I think that was drool I just wiped from my face! OMG Girl you are so lucky to have this fabulous lake front deck. Holy smokes I can’t believe how big it is! I chuckled at the photo of your stuffed to the ceiling van in the cargo hull of a BC Ferry. I think I would park my butt on that huge sofa on Friday night of the May long weekend and wouldn’t leave until Monday night of the September long weekend.

    1. Hi Marie! I know, the deck runs the entire length of the house! It is fabulous- though it gets pretty hot out there in the midday sun. But then, that’s the time of day that it is great to be down on the dock!! I am thrilled that we finally have some really comfy furniture this year- we are spending way more time out there and finally really using our outdoor square footage!
