A Panelled Ceiling?? {What do you think of them?! I need your help!}

I am on the fence about panelled ceilings and would love your opinion!

The other day, when I shared my Kitchen Inspiration and PLANS, I talked about my plans to panel the ceiling in our kitchen and dining room.

Do you love the look of panelled or planked ceilings? In a kitchen?

Would you do it?

I want to hear from YOU! What do you really think?

This is a big design decision.

It involves a lot of wood planks. Thousands of little nails. And a ton of overhead painting.

I originally came up with this idea because I want to install these gorgeous new light fixtures over our peninsula in the kitchen. And I want to change out our current pot lights for some slightly smaller more modern ones in addition to changing the position of the pot lights.

All of these changes mean holes in the ceiling. And wouldn’t panelling  be the perfect solution to covering all those holes??

So here is a little panelled ceiling inspiration…

But still, it is a big commitment. None of the other ceilings in the house are panelled – though I would love if we could add panelling to our vaulted ceiling in the living room – maybe with a big faux beam running down the center. And then what about the halls? The bedrooms? I think it would be fine to just panel some rooms and then perhaps smooth out the ceilings in the other rooms. I am really not a fan of the plastered texture that we have on them now.

Well, would you do it? Or would you just repair your ceilings? Or would you re-drywall the whole thing?

I would love to hear what you think!! Truly….

  1. I plan on doing a paneled ceiling but need help deciding where to stop.
Do you only do it in one room, main rooms or the whole house?
How should I transition from room to room?

  2. I have never seen a paneled ceiling that I didn’t LOVE! These are beautiful examples too. We put a beadboard ceiling in our laundry room a few years ago and I still enjoy looking at it every time I walk in. Our laundry room is by our back door to the garage so every time people come through that way, they comment on how much they like it. If I were you, I wouldn’t even hesitate!

  3. I have an 80’s style house which has paneled cathedral ceilings in natural pine polyurethane! I love it but it is outdated and it makes my kitchen dark, I would love to paint it white like the pics above. My husband however, think 80’s tragic is still all the rage! Maybe if I show him these pics I can get my own way. (Maybe)

    1. Good luck Nadia!! I absolutely love white panelled painted cathedral ceilings. In fact, that is one of the things I would love to add to this house- some pine planks that we paint out white. We have a lot of 70’s and 80’s homes in our community with cedar ceilings and men are always super hesitant to paint them – but if the urethane is stripped and they are given a natural finish they look better then they do with that super glossy poly finish. I hope you get your way:)

    2. Nadia,
My husband is the same way. He loves natural wood. I gave him a choice on refinishing something. I said we could paint it, or he could sand it down to its true natural look rather than the outdated orangy oak/pine. He chose the paint LOL.

  4. We used laminated planks in our kitchen remodel this year. The laminated covering does not need to be painted and looks great. We opted for this less expensive alternative because we have an older home. If we have plumbing issues, this will be cheaper to replace and easier to remove to get to the plumbing. The planks went a long way in keeping the look of our home cohesive with the modern touches we added.

    1. I’ve just recently learned about these new plank ceiling systems- pretty cool! Such a great option!

  5. I would do it an wouldn’t even mind the work. I would have to put up a faux beam to divide the living room (open floor plan), but it would be a thing of beauty!! We have the yucky popcorn ceiling. Every time I look at it all I can think is that whoever did the ceiling couldn’t do it right, so he had to texture it to cover cruddy work up…kind of like quarter round hiding a wonky wall.

    1. Totally agree- I think it is a great way to covering up a popcorn ceiling. I’m still hoping that we can do ours one of these days! The faux beam is a great idea too!

  6. The ceiling has to be painted, anyway, so painting isn’t an issue. I definitely like the look. It can make a narrow space look wider or a wide space look narrower. It adds a nice finishing touch to a room, to make it complete.

  7. Yes, love them! We are in the middle of giving our living room a faux-coffered ceiling look and considered using planks as a base, but in the end we weren’t sure they fit our house. They would look PERFECT in yours!

  8. I’m going to be the odd one out and say I wouldn’t do it. I’m not a fan of panelling on ceilings (or walls for that matter). I find it looks busy.

  9. I love the idea. I used tongue-in-groove planks on a bedroom ceiling that had been badly damaged. I loved it so much I’m working on doing the rest of the house!

  10. Hi Krista ~
This is one of those bucket list things.
I want to use beadboard on my ceilings throughout my entire home.
I love the look. It’s so clean and forgiving. Especially when you have a few bumps in your ceiling.
    So cottage
Thanks for sharing all these wonderful pictures.
    Much love,
    Rose

  11. The setting of your kitchen overlooking the lake, the shaker cabinets, the whole style you’ve created in the kitchen so far just scream out for a panelled ceiling in my mind. It would be the perfect finishing touch to your plans. There is also a natural stopping point where the dining room flows into the living room because of the different ceiling heights, which means you could put off panelling the living room or even not do it at all. Do you plan on living in this house for a while? If so it would be totally worth doing. It would bring the décor up to the next level of beach house.

  12. Yes! I think it’s perfectly acceptable to do a paneled ceiling in the kitchen only. The kitchen is such a unique and special room in the home. The planking adssuch a special cozy feeling. In fact I’ve been contemplating doing this myself. Thanks for all the inspiration pictures! Can’t wait to see more of your kitchen project.

  13. I agree it’s a HUGE decision, but I definitely think it’s one that you won’t regret. If you have the means, I say go for it! Paneled ceilings (and walls for that matter) are stunning!

  14. Oh…YES!!! It is awsome!!! I want to panel my downstairs bedroom. I say go for it!!! You have awsome decorating ideas!!! Thank you!!

  15. I would definitely do it…in fact we are about to tackle a kitchen renovation of our own and that’s exactly what we are going to do. We have beams already with popcorn ceilings in between. We
need to move some light fixtures as well and we will be adding bead board paneling or planking to cover the popcorn ceiling…I can’t wait to see what you decide. Thanks also for sharing all that gorgeous inspiration!

  16. I love it- have always loved it & would totally do it……or maybe pay someone to do it for me 🙂 There are some projects totally worth hiring a pro for to make sure it looks fabulous. But that’s just because I’m a newbie diy-er

  17. I would do it in a heartbeat! In a nanosecond. Just like that. I love it and your plan for your home. And I love the inspiration pics you shared, too. You have done your homework. Good luck!

  18. YES! I love, love, love the look of a paneled ceiling! It brings so much texture and warmth to a room! I’m hoping to work it into a few rooms in our home (master bedroom was the first to come to mind). I say go for it!!!
