#Sparking Joy: Decluttering Accessories & Makeup

The way to spark joy is to declutter and in this latest post I will share with you my tips on decluttering accessories and makeup!

The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up: A Journey To Sparking Joy graphic.

Good morning!

Are you ready to continue the purging, decluttering and organizing this week?

This is the third Sunday of this series I’m part of based on the Marie Kondo Method as outlined in her book “the life-changing magic of tidying up”.

Sparking Joy My Journey in Tidying Up books on the table.

I’ve been reading through this book and following along with Marie’s suggested methods for getting organized; once and for all. I’m thrilled to be in cahoots with these bloggers on this #SparkingJoy journey:

Last week I shared my first big step in this organizational journey. Tackling my clothing. I wrote about tips for purging your closet as well as an idea for what to do with all that clothing you purge: how to host a clothing exchange!

All those unwanted clothes can be put to great use and you can find some new treasures by to wear by hosting a Clothing Exchange.

And this week we are moving onto tackling our Accessories and Make-up.

I love my accessories. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, scarves, hats, and make-up. Nothing takes your simple and classic wardrobe pieces to the next level like some well chosen accessories.

And, as an accessory lover, I have come to acquire quite the collection of the years. Somehow they are very hard to part with. Maybe because they seem so small and minor and inconsequential, that it doesn’t seem like a big deal to hang onto them. Which can lead to accumulating much, much, much more than you really want or need.

Organizing And Purging Accessories

Marie recommends laying all your items of a specific category out on the floor. Well, I must say, I prefer to work off of my bed. I like the height. I don’t want to put it all down on the floor because then I have to bend down there to pick it all up. So I started by spreading all my accessories out on the bed (I divided each subcategory up and went by: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, scarves, hats, and then make-up).

Jewellery laid out on the bed to organize.

Again, it is about the intuition.

The feeling.

Listening to your gut.

So I picked up each piece and asked myself if it “sparked joy” for me.

I listened to my gut. And I didn’t let any feelings of obligations or guilt enter into my decision. If it didn’t really spark joy, I (tried to) thank it for it’s purpose in my life and then moved it to the discard pile.

Holding a necklace with green and blue beads.

It was pretty amazing to me how many accessories I was hanging onto that really didn’t spark any kind of joy.

But when I stopped and looked at them, I realized that I hadn’t worn most of them for many, many years. And I was just hanging onto them just, simply, to hang onto them. “In case”. And “in case” never came. And never will, right?

All the necklaces together in a bundle on the white bed spread.

There were a few pieces that did #sparkjoy for me but that were broken. I put them in a small pile on my dresser and have given myself a week to have all repairs completed. If they aren’t done by then, then I don’t actually care enough to bother keeping them, right?

Pliers on the bed beside the necklaces.

This is all I was left with from that original pile….

Laying out the pieces to keep.

And then I followed the same process with the rest of my accessories (earrings, bracelets, scarves, hats – which all “bit the dust”, and then finally my make-up).

I cleaned up my make-up drawer completely and got rid of a lot that I haven’t used in years… or, perhaps, ever. Which freed up enough room to get a few new basics that I needed.

I just love it when a well executed organizational plan comes together….

A makeup drawer with dividers in it.

Well?!?!

How has this process been going for you (if you have been tackling it too)? I am curious to hear other people’s experiences with it. So far, it has been easier then expected to part with my “extras”. Seems that I knew in my gut that I didn’t really need them.

Not sure how it will go when it comes time to tackle my decor accessories. That could be a whole other story!

Have a look at what my fellow #sparkingjoy blogging friends have accomplished this week- and how they are finding this process!

  1. I just went through my clothes this weekend. I really have to be in the right mood to do this. I usually ask myself, ‘if I were moving, would I take it with me?’. These posts have really inspired me to really look at each item and purge. Thanks!

  2. Good job! I did this with shoes not too long ago and it’s been great. I could easily get rid on 5 more but I’m in no rush. I did my makeup and bathroom items when we remodeled our bathroom. It was a big eye opener as to what I really use on a daily basis vs what we keep just to keep. But my jewelry is a different story…. I keep it all. I shouldn’t but I do. I’ve thought about selling/donating some but then the art teacher side of me says I could make something new with it. Or let my daughter have them for dress up. But I may go through them some day. Too much junk is driving me crazy.
