Tweaking the Entry Hall with DIY Faux Map Wallpaper

I’ve always had a love of maps.

I remember being in elementary school and spending what felt like hours pouring over the pages of our school atlas.

I would figure out where we were, then read through all the provinces, states, countries, and cities… imagining all the places the I wanted to visit one day.

Something about maps just opens up a feeling of hope: like a world of possibility laid out before you in graphics.

And today, I still love maps. Their texture. Colour. The world of possibilities they encompass.

Plus, they make a beautiful and interesting focal point when laid out in this easy DIY faux map wallpaper…

I originally used this idea in my boys’ shared bedroom space but we have started a little closet-turned-office makeover project so the maps had to come down.

I took them down with such sadness that I realized I really wanted to see them somewhere else in our home…

And that’s when this whole entry hall tweaking project began.

To make this DIY faux map wallpaper, I used something surprising.

Painter’s Tape!

The delicate surface FrogTape to be exact, but I would have used the regular FrogTape if I had had any one hand.

Once I live with this map wallpaper for a while and decide that I really want to commit to it, then I plan to add push pins to some corners to secure it further – like I did in the boys’ bedroom.

This is what that looked like:

I simply put loops of painters tape on the back of the maps, placed them on the wall, and pressed down firmly. I layered the maps as I went, and cut a few slightly to fit better in the space. I stood back every now and then to get a better overall view as I went – but it really was quite a quick and easy project to do.

Done!

I love how the colours in these maps work so well with the wall colour we have in the entry hall (it is Colorado Gray by Benjamin Moore). I think it adds a fun, graphic, colourful accent to our entry.

The two chairs are additional chairs that we have for our dining room table, and the new little entry hall table was a makeover project that I will share with you soon.
