Two Buck Luck: A Painted Texture Table Makeover on the Cheap

Hello everyone! We’ve been working hard around here this weekend to get several projects finished up and the house ‘back in order’. Whenever projects happen it seems to create some sort of snowball effect that scatters a little bit of chaos in every room in our house. Does that happen at your house too?

One of the projects to finish up was this little side table that I bought from my friend Jessica… she had it in her garage sale pile and sold it to me for a whopping TWO BUCKS! Granted, it needed some work, but I am totally thrilled with how this little baby turned out.

Cute? Especially when you consider how it started out… I remembered to take this before picture mid-cleaning, as you can tell by the bucket on top:

It was pretty rough and certainly not a fine piece of furniture. But I liked the shape of the top (kind of echoes our octagonal coffee table) as well as the price:)  Plus, there was a little inspiration filed in my brain that I wanted to use on something… and this table seemed like the perfect place.

My inspiration came from Deb at Lake Girl Paints. Deb is an amazingly talented artist who creates beautiful pieces of furniture and signs and takes a fun, fresh, and unique approach to each piece that she tackles. I LOVE her projects and she has excellent tutorials! You can buy her pieces if you don’t want to take one on yourself. This gorgeous texture blast table of hers is what inspired my own texture table experiment.

Texture Blast Table

Isn’t it insanely gorgeous! You can check out her tutorial for creating this at Lake Girl Paints: Texture Blast Table. As soon as I saw this piece I filed it in my brain for future use (as well as pinned it!):

Now, to apply this look to my little two buck lucky find. After a thorough cleaning, the first step was to PRIME. I used a basic water based primer I had on hand.

Don’t look at my messy garage in the background please.

After priming the table top I also painted the base with two coats of white latex paint.

Now onto the fun part! Once primed and dry, get out your craft paints (colors of your choice), some cardstock, and a plate for your paint blobs (technical term). You can see I have my IPAD ready to go as well so that I could follow along with Deb’s tutorial as I went.

To begin I dipped the folded end of cardstock into the paint blobs and pulled them across the top of my table…. adding more paint fairly frequently as the cardstock/paint doesn’t spread very far.

I decided to start with a striped effect of green, yellow, and blue and continued my way across the table top.

I also kind of mixed the different colors together slightly by dipping the cardstock in a couple of colours and ran it across the stripes to make the stripes appear less uniform.

Once complete I knew it was brighter than I wanted it to be. So I let it dry completely (which happens fairly quickly with craft paint) and then got out my white craft paint. I used a smaller piece of cardstock and dragged white paint over the original stripes to tone them down a little.

My advice is to just keep playing with it until you get the effect you like. You really can’t screw it up because you can always add more coloured paint if you over-whitify.

Once you are happy with the look, let it dry completely again. Now add a couple of coats of a water based sealer (or if you want to do this for an outside table use a sealer appropriate for exteriors…This would be a fun outdoor side table too).

All sealed and ready to go. But the sides of this particular table were a little unsightly because it is not exactly an example of fine craftsmanship.

I decided to add some detail (and cover the ugly sides) with some sisal rope. It came in a fifty foot roll and I  bought it at either Walmart or Dollarama… can’t quite remember. It was super inexpensive either way.

sisal rope in package

I used my tiny but trusty hot glue gun to help me attach the rope, working in fairly small sections and wrapping / gluing the rope all the way around the edges. My glue gun stick holder can just happens to match this project, honestly I didn’t plan it:)  Not that I would be beyond such a thing.

Once my rope was wrapped all the way around the table, I cut the edge and glued it down where it met up with the beginning piece. I staggered my starting points at different places around the table so that all the edges wouldn’t begin/end on the same line. This helps to hide things a little better.

I repeated this step until all the sides were completely covered with the twine.

Finished! You can hardly see the beginning/end points – they are hidden well amongst the natural texture of the rope:

I am really pleased with how it turned out. The top is so fun and textured – thanks to Deb’s fabulous texture painting tutorial! And I also really like the added texture and fresh nautical feel that the sisal rope edging gives it.

It fits in perfectly with the lighter brighter colours going on in the living room now…

I’m totally pleased with the transformation… for a two buck table and some paint and rope.
