20 Ways to Add Interest with Wall Paneling

Today I’m sharing a collection of 20 different ideas for adding interest and character to your decor with decorative wall paneling or DIY Panelled Walls.

Wall paneling and DIY panelled walls have long been one of my very favourite ways to add character and interest to a builder-basic room without breaking the bank on furnishings and accessories.

Panelled walls can be dramatic and a huge focal point, if you choose a style or colour that is unique or strong. But wall paneling can also be quiet and soft, playing a serene background role in your room but adding a ton of character, texture, and interest that would not have been there with a basic flat wall. And when you create a pretty envelope, you need less in terms of art and accessories, so the extra time and effort it takes to install wall paneling is definitely worth it in the end.

Today I’m sharing 20 ways to add interest and character with wall paneling, and these ideas could apply to various rooms throughout your home.

With the One Room Challenge project we are tackling right now, I definitely want to add a decorative panelled wall to our bedroom as a feature behind our headboard. (I’m also considering some kind of paneling in our ensuite bathroom, but I’m leaning more towards vertical shiplap at this point because it’s such a small and narrow space.)

For the master bedroom wall, I’ve done some “Pinteresearch” and gathered together a collection of beautiful ideas that I think would look amazing as a feature wall… as well as thrown in a few of the panelled walls that we did in our previous house!

I hope you find some decor inspiration in this collection; I know that I have and I can’t wait to share our master bedroom plans with you later this week!

  1. My favorite look for paneled walls is up a stairway. Gives SO much character to what is normally a really blank wall. I’m sure what you’re doing in your home will be amazing. Looking forward to seeing it when finished.

  2. WOW! These are fantastic ideas. This technique could solve a problem I have with updating bedrooms in my home in Finland where the walls are wall papered particle board. Thanks, Krista!
