5 Tips for How to Create a Welcoming Holiday Entry

Today I’m sharing my favourite 5 tips for how to create a welcoming holiday entry and am joined by my friends sharing their festive Christmas Porches for your inspiration.

When decorating your home for the holidays, don’t forget about your front entrance! Whether you have a generous and wide front porch , or a tiny little entry like ours, it can be a quick and easy task to create an extension of your home to welcome your guests this holiday season. Today I’m sharing my best five tips and a step-by-step process for giving your from porch that extra festive polish for the approaching holiday season.

5 Easy tips for creating a welcoming holiday entry poster.

One – Remove the Failing Hints of Fall

If you have pumpkins past their prime, fall blooms that have long since stopped blooming, and a wreath from the season before, it’s time to bid them farewell and create a blank canvas for your new holiday decor. Our front porch is always getting muddy and needs a good clean after the rainy fall season. Give your porch floor a quick rinse to make it fresh and tidy. Once it’s clean, add a fresh new door mat to set the stage for your fun and festive holiday decor.

Two – Begin with Greenery

I always start my holiday porch decor by stuffing my pots full of as much greenery as I possibly can. I love using cedar, pine, holly, and lots of red branches – but you can use other types of evergreens that might be more common in your area. Stuff your pots and then consider adding some garlands around your door frame or other areas on your porch that lend themselves to being adorned.

Three – Light the Night

Add some bright outdoor lighting wherever you can. The last few years I’ve really taken to battery operated lighting that is easy to switch on and off (some of it can even be set on a timer). It adds so much warmth to a porch or entry to have some additional festive lights. Also, consider investing in some lanterns and pick up wax-like faux candles that can be set on a timer to give that extra bit of candle lit ambiance to your entry. Perfect for welcoming guests during the long, dark nights of the holiday season.

Four – Add Something

This is the fun part! Add a few decorative touches that work with the rest of your holiday decor and, ideally, flow beautifully into your in-doors. I have collected, over the years, a wooden vintage sled and some vintage cross country skis that add to the festive vintage feel of our Christmas porch. As much as my husband hates to store them from year to year, I love to see them out and welcoming guests that we invite into our home.

Five – Top it Off with a Holiday Wreath

The wreath! It’s like the icing on the cake. It’s really the focal point of the porch as the door is the main thing that you look at as you approach a home (hopefully!). So, make it good. It doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple and classic traditional greenery wreath is a lovely way to adorn your door… you can even add some additional touches like Christmas ornaments or decorations, ribbon, berries, or even an old pair of skates!
