Beautiful Coastal & Blue Exteriors

I just love blue home exteriors, they have such a beautiful coastal vibe.   Here are my favourite inspiration pictures!

As I shared with you last week, we have started working towards transforming the exterior of our home. And if transforming is a big word for it, then at least we are tweaking and freshening up the tired exterior. Landscaping, fencing, decking, and siding. We are also hoping to add a new front and garage door. Big project. LOTS of tough decisions to be made… like what colour and finish our coastal house should be!?!

And I’m drawn back to one colour again and again.

Surprise!

It’s blue. I just can’t seem to get away from it. Even for the exterior of our house; I’m constantly drawn to the timeless serenity of blue exteriors. Coastal style exterior finishing. Even to fresh blue accents in doors and shutters.

But even within blue there are so many shade variations. From light to dark; the palette extends from airy and grey blue, warm grey blue to the darkest almost-black navy. What’s your favourite?

Do you remember when I shared the BEFORE pictures of our exterior of our house and yard?

A white house with a large green lawn in front.

Now to decide what to do… today I’m sharing some beautiful exteriors that are inspiring me!

Pretty much my dream, right here. I wish we had some more architectural lines to work with on our home; but this beautiful home showcases how contrasting white trim can pop beautifully against a light almost wistful aqua-blue exterior… And that door! And garage door! I love it all. Via Home Stories A to Z

Next up, I love the crisp white trim, soft coloured metal roof, and craftsman lines of this home via Magnolia Market

This next one is pretty much a dream; I mean, it’s literally ON a lake… but aside from that, I love the deep rich blue colour and how it mixes so beautifully with woodland cedar shingles and crisp white trim. I can’t even start with those pots full of fountain grass… Via Style at Home

A dark blue house by a lake with cedar trim and a large deck.

Obviously totally dream worthy, once again; I feel like this home Via House Beautiful is right out of a movie set. But even though the lines are so amazing, I think a light blue shingled exterior would add prominent character to even the most boring of home designs (like ours!).

I love shingle exteriors; and this colour is so unique. Almost minty aqua. I would definitely consider this colour; I think it would feel equally pretty and fresh in our lakeside location as it does on this city street… Found via Pinterest  (but let me know if you know the original source!).

Once again, white trim for the win. And the rounded windows in the dormers are super sweet with garden window boxes galore. Even the front door is rounded! Via Azek

Classic! And once again, the columns and trim details make a huge difference in this beautiful home found  Via Home Bunch. Look at the corbels!

And now for the exact colour of blue that we are seriously considering; it is hard to find a true colour example online! It’s called Boothbay Blue by Hardie Siding and I’ve found a few houses that are supposedly this colour but they all look a bit different in the pictures.  It’s such a warm welcoming tone of blue!

Here is one Via

And another one Via Lowes

The house is painted a gray/blue with white trim and reddish bricks.

And a third example Via  Houzz….

Do those all look the same colour to you?!?! Eek! It’s such a big decision!

And although I’m fairly set on blue as the colour; part of me still wavers!

I also found some Coastal Exteriors that were really inspiring; even if they aren’t ALL blue; I find I’m still drawn to blue accents in doors and shutters…

I’ve seriously considered a light charcoal grey shingle exterior as well; it feels so coastal and soft and pretty. I love this exterior with that stunning aqua-mint door! Via Addisons Wonderland

It might not be blue but it’s definitely coastal with those weather shingles… And I can’t even get over the gorgeous hydrangeas Via Kelly Elko

Okay – so nothing blue here, but isn’t it stunning?!?! Via The Inspired Room

And I can’t decide if this is dark dark navy or black… but it certainly makes a dramatic statement! Via Lonny

And this one isn’t blue but it has a coastal feel with the weathered shingles and blue shutters. The English garden feel of the front yard is so pretty… and, really, I could picture a body of water behind it, couldn’t you? Such a sweet cottage Via House Beautiful

What do you think? What’s your favourite?!?

Did you find some inspiration for your own exterior dreams?

Want to remember it?

This is awesome! Pin it to remember it!

  1. Have lived in a blue house for 7 years. Love it. It is a “natural” color. Not trendy. Some shake accents would be great too! If you do white trim, make sure it is a soft white, not stark white. Do what you love.

  2. I am in the research process of choosing colors for my 30 year old two story farmhouse. It has a large wrap around front porch. Although we are in the burbs, we have 3 acres of a heavily wooded lot with 100-150 yr old oaks in MS. The front is siding with gray AR fieldstone, but the back is red, terracotta brick mix. I am partial to blue gray green colors, but I’m still unsure. I’m looking at Wythe blue BM, with SW Pure White trim. Just not sure.

  3. The fifth house down (on the city street) is ours. The color is Stratton Blue by Benjamin Moore. I should say; it was ours. We recently moved and are in the process of picking out colors for our new house. So tempted to try Stratton Blue again. 🙂

  4. I have been searching for this color for months now and I am down to the wire now. We are days away from having the exterior of our house painted and this is the exact color I have been wanted to do. I have spent over $250 dollars on paint samples and still cant seam to find the exact match. HELP!!!! Do you or anyone else know what color they used on the exterior of this home!!!

    1. Hello Krysti – this post is an ideas/inspiration post meaning that these aren’t houses that I’ve painted myself – but a collection of ideas that I have gathered. If you click on the link related to the image that you like the paint colour on, hopefully they have listed the colour there. I’m not sure which image you like the colour of as your comment is not directed to a specific image but on the post as a whole.

  5. I love all the examples. I could use some help in selecting a blue color scheme for my house this spring. Who can I reach out to?

  6. What luck I found you blog
Love the aqua blues with charcoal just can’t decide where to put what color
    Shingle color
Lake house with some gray days

  7. Just found your post and the timing is perfect. We are thinking about changing our beige, aged siding and going to a medium-deep blue with white trim and gray accents. The collection of houses you put together gives us more ideas. Thanks for doing some of the work for us. Now I need to check out your blog to see if you’ve made the change at your own house.

  8. Wow, what an amazing color each and every house got themselves. I love all the colors but when I showed this post to my kid, he said that he loved the blue color of the house. now he is convincing me to try this color. hopefully, it will look great at my house and make an amazing look to feel warm and healthy.
    what do you say?

  9. I’m with you on the blues. I love, love, love them. I grew up in a pale blue aluminum sided house (remember those), and I loved it when they first had it done, but by the time I was a young adult I wished it was white or grey like all the other houses in the neighborhood. I felt like it stuck out like a sore thumb. I guess my point is that colors come in and out of favor, and even though I love blue and always have, I would be hesitant to paint the outside of my house that color. I would go with grey with aqua blue shutters/trim. But that’s just me. 🙂

    1. When I was a little girl, I begged my parents to paint the outside of our house pink. Surprisingly, they never agreed to it. You make a good point about colour choices changing; greys are always safe and a door can easily be changed. But I have lived with grey and white houses for my whole adult life; so perhaps it’s time for a little risk?!? I don’t know… haha, by the time it needs painting my boys will be teenagers so maybe they could do it!

  10. I looked through all the pictures and went right back to the first one! The lighter blue tickled my fancy and I’ve always liked Dutch colonials. It’s a winner. They’re all beautiful but I like the lighter blue and all the windows in it. It looks very homey.

    1. That first house has such stunning architecture! All the white trim pops beautifully – I wish we had a bit more drama in our architecture, hopefully the new siding and trim will add some interest and drama!

  11. I just love that mint green house! I know you’ll pick something great — I love all your selections so far!

  12. My very favorite is the grey (gray?) with the aqua door. We live in a coastal town and can relate to that one. Our own house is grey with a slightly lighter grey trim, lots of white, a red front door, and a slate grey garage door and roof. It fits well in with neighboring homes which is another thing to consider. To get perfect colors, I have actually gone up to houses with my paint deck as sometimes they aren’t exactly what they seem. The first red we chose for our door looked black in the porch recess.

    1. Hi Bonnie, Your colours sound lovely and you make a good point about considering the other houses in the neighbourhood. We don’t really live in a traditional neighbourhood – there are only a couple of houses around us. One of them is a natural cedar shingle that they are letting grey with time; and the other is a neutral toned hardie plank exterior (browns and tans). That’s a good point about the door colour as well -a red could definitely look dark. I love the aqua doors, but that won’t work with a blue toned siding. So many decisions!

  13. I love them all but my favorite is the third one as well, dark blue with cedar shingles and white trim, Style At Home, simply stunning! Makes me want to repaint our home which we just did so maybe just the front door.

    1. Hi Patty! I know, I love that one so much. It’s a beautiful colour and the whole setting is perfect. Those planters and the deck! Wow!

  14. The navy blue with the rounded front door color is BEAUTIFUL! Because… It looks amazing with bright white trim and all flowers/landscape of any color pop against it. It is a very clean/crisp look.
Opinion about the taupe or gray colors: if you get fog or gray days/lots of rain, it can be a depressing color choice instead of a crisp one…Don’t know the climate where you are.
That being said, the 2 blues following your pic of your own home are very beauty and pretty.

    1. Hi Sandra – we live on the West Coast so it is very foggy and grey here much of the year. I think that’s why I’m always drawn to colour both in and outside our home; because I need some colour to get through all the rain!

  15. Good luck honey. They are all beautiful. I personally like the darker blue shingle by houzz. For your style, I like the last picture but not the bold blue shutters, a more calmer blue that compliments you, the blue color of your oar. Have fun and we can’t wait to see what you decide. Ps. You have encouraged me to redo my closet.

    1. I do love a dark blue shingle as well. I wish we could add some shutters somewhere… I’ll have to think about that! Good luck with your closet – I am still thrilled with ours and it is so much easier to keep organized!

    1. The beachy aqua colour is super pretty – it would definitely be a unique choice; you don’t see many houses that colour around here!

    1. Isn’t that one dreamy, Diane? And I can’t get over those outdoor planters in that picture either -the fountain grass! The whole dock/deck scene in that one really draws me in.

  16. I’m drawn to blue as well and I’m pretty sure every exterior you just blogged about, I already have pinned. LOL I’m really drawn to the photo in the top left- dark blue with the natural cedar shingles. I love it. Can’t wait to see what you end up choosing.

    1. Hi Marsha! The cedar shingles are a nice contrast, aren’t they? I haven’t decided if we want to add cedar or not, but it’s really popular in this area.
