Before & After Lawn Makeover Project

I am very excited to share with you our before & after lawn makeover project and also our lawn care!

You guys!

I’m so excited that it worked. It actually worked.

Our lawn makeover project….

We finally have a nice, healthy, lush green lawn in the front yard!

After years of leaving our front lawn in rough shape; never weeding or fertilizing or watering it; we finally tackled this problem area head on. And I couldn’t be happier with the fantastic results.

Plus, I’ve come up with a lawn maintenance plan for how we can actually keep up this makeover.

I can’t wait to share the amazing before and afters from our lawn makeover project!

Before and After Our Lawn Makeover graphic.

I shared all the details about how our plans for developing a lush, healthy lawn here.

Dreaming of a lush healthy lawn and our five step plan to finally get there this year

And then I shared the step-by-step process we are following for lawn aerating, thatching, overseeding, and fertilizing it here.

A green lawn, with a wooden chair, a rake, seeds and watering.

As I shared before, we started out with a lawn in very rough shape. It was basically a mix of weeds and moss with a few tufts of stubborn grass that somehow hadn’t been killed off by lack of lawn care.

Grass with moss mixed in with it and bare patches.

We first worked to get rid of the bad (aerating, de-thatching, and using Scott’s Eco-Sense Weed B Gon).

Overseeding the lawn with a straw looking lawn out front of the house.

We then overseeded the lawn  using two types of grass seed -a Drought Mix for the dry areas around our big tree and a Sun & Shade Mix for everywhere else.

And then fertilized it with Scotts Turf Builder Starter

Fertilizer in the bag by the Scott's seeding container.

And now for the AFTER

Bright green lawn in the front of the house.

Gorgeous green lawn!

We still have a few stubborn weeds to contend with, but I know that by continuing to work on it over the coming months we can eventually “weed them out”.

When we originally fertilized the new lawn, we used Turf Builder Starter Lawn Food but this fall we plan to apply Scotts Turf Builder Fall Lawn Food to continue to strengthen the roots of our new lawn. As the lawn strengthens it will be able to fight off and crowd out the weeds.

  1. Wow, the results of your lawn afterward were amazing, especially how green and lush it looks next to your beautiful home and thriving bushes and plants. Yesterday, my husband and I decided that we want to sell our home so that we can downsize and save some money. Our lawn isn’t in the best shape right now, so I think hiring a lawn care service to achieve something similar to this would be so helpful!

    1. Hi Nell,
We are in Zone 7 – but I’m thinking that the grasses sold in most areas are zone specific (and have a wide zone range). Good luck with your project!

  2. Wow lovely results, i was wondering if you used the Turf Builder top soil that you had mentioned in an earlier post? If so, how did you apply it? Thanks

  3. Good morning, I am in western Washington. Wondering about your steps in lawn care. Did you do steps 1-4 all in one day (spraying weeds, aerating and over seeding) or do u need to leave time in between each step?

    1. Hi Kristi, You might want to read my first post about it: Our Five Step plan for a healthy lawn: , followed by how to prepare and overseed your lawn : . I think they will make the process much clearer! The post you were on just shared the before and after and then linked to those posts if you want more details on how we actually accomplished the lawn makeover. Good luck!

  4. Did you do all the work in one day? If not how many days after you added the seeds did you apply the fertilizer

    1. Hi Desiree,
We used a fertilizer designed for new grass seed (a starter fertilizer – I believe I linked to it in the post), and that went on right after we put down the grass seed. Hope that helps!

  5. Do you do all the steps at once? Or how much time to leave in between? We just covered an in ground pool so we have to start from scratch and get grass fast in the backyard or it will be just mud if it rains and sod is out of the question.

    1. Hi Simona! It sounds like you are starting with fresh topsoil, then, over your old pool area? So I would just get some grass seed down as soon as it is warm enough for it to germinate and use the fertilizer for new grass seed. Keep it lightly moist as it germinates, and you should see new grass begin to emerge within 10 days to 2 weeks. We just replanted our whole back lawn using this method in September, though we will have to overseed and repair some winter damage that happened because the lawn was so new when winter arrived. Hope that helps!

    1. Has Tasja – we did the project in early June (which is a bit late in the spring – ideally you would start earlier), and those photos were taken about 6 weeks later. Hope that helps!

    1. Hi Tammy – you can definitely start working on your lawn in the fall. There is fertilizer that is designed for fall, and you can also patch and over-seed and get some new grass seed growing as well if you need to. We are planning to seed our back yard this fall. I think the key is that you want your new seed well established before the ground starts to freeze, so depending on where you live you want to plan accordingly. Good luck with your project!
