The Best Hands-On Low-Tech Gift Ideas for Kids

Wow! November 7th! It seems like it was just Halloween and now we are already a full week into November!

This past weekend I worked on packing away our fall decor and am bringing out the Christmas. I know! I know! It’s really early this year… but we’ve got a hectic few weekends coming up and then December is going to be a whirlwind. We’ve got a special trip planned for my birthday, in addition to all of the usual December busyness with parties, concerts, and events.

I want to be able to REALLY enjoy the Christmas season this year, so I’m starting to get organized for it all NOW! Have you started to think about Christmas gift ideas for kids yet? That’s always my favourite place to start… and we have six school aged kids that we buy for in our family (including our own).

A few favourites that have peaked my interest for my boys, my nieces and my nephews are…

I know my boys and niece would all love the hands-on digging in this  Mega Gemstone Mine…

And imagine what they could create with this 3-D Pen for kids?  I have never seen these before – it’s pretty fantastic what kids can create with them!

My son got something similar for his birthday last year and absolutely loved it:  Crystal Growing Kit

This one harks back to my youth; I remember spending hours creating beautiful designs with my Spirograph

Magnet anything is hugely popular in my elementary school classroom (from Kindergarten through grade 6!); and I thought this GeoMagnet Construction Kit looked like a great low-tech hands-on gift idea for kids who like to build and create.

My youngest loves science and magic tricks so I know he’d love the activities in this Magic Science kit…

And I’m pretty certain that Hatchimals , though less hands-on then some things, are one of the number one gift requests amongst school aged kids this year!

Here are a few other fantastic low-tech hands-on gift ideas that I found!

Did you see the free printable Christmas planning sheets that I shared the other day? Pop over to get your own copy!

I’ve got mine printed and I’m starting to work on my gift planning! I’m determined to have 90% of my shopping done and under the tree well before the big day this year. With school in session until December 22nd, I don’t want to spend those last few days before Christmas rushing around trying to wrap up last minute details.

I want to enjoy it! You know… spend time with our family and friends;  go for walks in the snow, drink hot chocolate by the fire; and just generally take time to actually appreciate the spirit of the season.

  1. I bought a crystal growing kit and a slime kit for my 6 year old niece this year for Christmas. They are really the best gifts!
