Boho Coastal Master Bedroom Reveal

Today I’m sharing our cabin master bedroom makeover reveal featuring a refresh with Benjamin Moore Simply White paint as well as boho coastal decor in all shades of aquas and blues.

This summer, as we packed up our forest house and got ready to move into the cabin while we build our new home, I decided the time was ripe to paint the entire cabin before getting settled in to it.  Because, you know, moving wasn’t enough of a project for July. I started with the master bedroom, which was a dark  green/brown colour.  I remember using a similar colours 13 years ago in our second house, and it being super on-trend at the time.  But we definitely wanted a lighter brighter look in the cabin as it felt very dark and heavy throughout, especially with the master bedroom being  a north facing room and with all the natural fir trim. I’ll say it again… the power of paint always astounds me!

Here is how our master bedroom looked when we first looked at the cabin last June – they left it fully furnished so this is basically what we walked into on possession day…

And now…

We were pretty thrilled that it could feel so light and bright and airy with just (four!) coats of white paint:) I thought it would be perfect to share this makeover today as part of the Colours of Home Fall Tour series hosted by Kelly of The Tattered Pew and Mansa of This is Simplicite.  All week long bloggers are sharing part of their home decorated for fall.

If you’ve popped over from Vintage Society Co., then welcome!

If you’re new here, my name is Krista and I’ve been sharing my ideas, DIYs, and inspiration on this blog for the past eight years.  I love to share our home renovation projects, decorating ideas, seasonal decor and projects, organizing tips, recipes, and free printable art. I’d love to have you stick around and explore a little bit.  And don’t forget to see what my friends are sharing for their tour this week, as well. You can check that out at the bottom of this post!

I added a few fall touches in our master bedroom, but am most excited to show you how we refreshed it without losing the cabin-character of it.

In addition to painting all the walls, we replaced the blinds and hung blackout drapery on the large window and sliding doors.  We also brought in the Ikea Malm dressers that we had used in our previous master bedroom.  We decided to use them as nightstands, since we really needed the extra storage as we were downsizing to one small shared closet.  I used our vintage art above each “nightstand/dresser” to help create the colour scheme that we wanted.

And now…

The bedding, pillows, rug, and bench were all from this bedroom makeover, and th eIkea Hemnes dresser was brought from our forest house bedroom as well.  We did buy a new bed on clearance from The Brick last summer after we purchased the cabin because we wanted a King sized bed like we had in our forest house.  Aside from that, this makeover took a “use what you have” kind of approach.

And now…

Before…

And now…

The only new things (aside from the bed and window treatments) that I purchased for this room were the two lamps (from HomeSense last summer), the wicker chair (from Ikea), the new ceiling light fixture, and the African wall baskets over the bed.

If you aren’t from the west coast, you may not be familiar with fir trim, but it is very much a west coast of BC kind of decor detail.  Much of the wood is milled locally, and clear fir has beautiful colouring that makes it popular throughout our local area (especially in Tofino and Ucluelet on the very west coast of Vancouver Island).  All that to say that because we don’t know how long we are going to keep this cabin, we don’t want to remove the character of the wood trim because it’s a popular design feature for cabins, cottages, and getaway homes in the area where we live.  So… the trick was to find a paint colour that would lighten up the space without painting out all of the trim as well.  Simply White it was!

Simply White has long been a favourite of mine though we used a crisper true white throughout the forest house.  Simply White has a very slight yellow undertone so it feels a bit warmer, and you will notice it feels creamy with the north-facing aspect of our master bedroom.

And now…

Although this room is dark much of the day because of it’s north facing aspect, we actually really love that about it all summer long, because it never gets too warm in here even when it’s a HOT summer day outside.

I’m super excited to show you the rest of the cabin makeover next week!  Until then, you’ll find more beautiful fall inspiration in the tours being shared this week.  I hope you enjoy them:)
