Cozy Up Your Fall Decor with Easy DIY Sweater Pumpkins

I will show you how to upcycle an old sweater and create a cute sweater pumpkin!

We have had some gorgeous clear, crisp, and cold Fall days lately; so cold, it seems, that even my pumpkins have taken to wearing sweaters. But seriously, these little guys were super easy to whip up and add a cozy, warm touch to our fall décor at very little expense.

Easy DIY Sweater Pumpkins with twine stems and burlap leaves on the counter beside some orange pottery.

To make these you will need:

  • Pumpkin forms (mine were Styrofoam from The Dollar Tree and the $1 section at Target)
  • old sweaters (I picked mine up at a Thrift store) – they were a thinner weave sweater style
  • scissors
  • twine and burlap (for the stem and leaves)
  • Hot glue gun and glue (and fingers of steel to protect you from those hot glue gun burns)

Foam pumpkins and old sweaters on the table.

Start by cutting an arm off of an old sweater – I was able to cover the two black pumpkins using just one arm from one sweater. I used a different sweater and color to cover the orange dollar tree pumpkin.

Cutting the sleeves off the old white sweater.

Basically, you just wrap a piece of the arm onto the pumpkin – carefully stretching, cutting, and gluing it

Using the glue gun to glue the sweater onto the foam pumpkin.

Then wrap the pumpkin stems with twine using hot glue to adhere it….

For the orange pumpkin with the small, flat end, I carefully wrapped the twine around the stem adding glue as I went…

Lastly cut some lobed leaves out of burlap and used a dot of glue to attach them to the finished pumpkins…

Done!

I was excited to create something that would carry us through into November once all the Halloween is put away for another year. I think these cozy little sweaters pumpkins do the trick.

There is an orange gourd beside the pumpkins.

And since it only took 1.5 sweater sleeves and three $1 pumpkins (in addition to 18 sticks of hot glue, 13 band aids, and 2 tubes of burn cream to nurse all my hot glue gun burns…) I would say this was a pretty thrifty little DIY project.

    1. Hi Tara- it is a great cover up for those funny lines on the dollar tree pumpkins as well. And since the sweaters were picked up at a $5 per bag sale at my local thrift shop (along with my son’s Halloween costume parts) they were even cheaper then the pumpkins themselves. I love projects like that:) Thanks for the pin friend!!

    1. Yay- that is awesome Linda! They are perfect for after Halloween as well I think – more “fall” then Halloween. I hope yours turn out really well!
