Cute & Thrifty DIY Sweater Pumpkins

Today I’m sharing a quick and easy fall craft project, these cute and thrifty DIY sweater pumpkins – the perfect way to add a little cozy touch to your fall decor, using thrift store and dollar store finds!

Hello, friends!

Welcome to the last week of summer around here…

Of course, in actuality,  summer will stretch on until late September. Buuuuuuuuuut! It’s our last week of summer vacation, so that pretty much means end of summer, am I right? And, as much as I normally lament going back to our busy school year schedules after a relaxing summer, this year I’m feeling a little more ready than most years.

The westcoast weather has been a little cooler the last couple of weeks and we’ve been inundated with smoke from the tons of wildfires burning around our province (Side note:  such a terrible situation – the increase in summer fires is sure scary). But, between the smoke and the cooler days, it has really begun to feel like fall around here. To the point that I finally put away our “summer” decor touches and brought out the “fall”. EEK!

This means, that, of course we are once again sporting cute pumpkins on every possible surface in our home. Some of my  favourite pumpkins are these super cute and thrifty sweater pumpkins that I DIYed, so today I wanted to share the easy tutorial with you…

Cute, right?!

And some of my favourite blogging friends are sharing their adorable DIY/Craft tutorials as well, as part of the Fall Seasonal Simplicity Series.

Make sure to check the bottom of this post for their beautiful fall DIY ideas!

If you’ve been following along for a while, you may have spotted these in a couple of previous fall tours, but likely have never seen the tutorial for them…

Well, today I’m revealing all!

These cuties were made with cheap dollar store pumpkin forms (a foam based pumpkin, I think), and sweaters from the thrift store! I made two white ones and one green one, but these days the green one doesn’t usually make the “cut” and I stick to displaying the white sweater pumpkins.

I started out with my thrifty materials. They only had one of the orange pumpkins left, so the two black ones were more of a sparkly Halloween type design. Didn’t matter – they were getting covered, either way!

So, you’ll need:

  • Pumpkin forms (mine were Styrofoam from The Dollar Tree and the $1 section at Target)
  • old sweaters (I picked mine up at a Thrift store) – they were a thinner weave sweater style
  • scissors
  • twine and burlap (for the stem and leaves)
  • Hot glue gun and glue (and fingers of steel to protect you from those hot glue gun burns)

The plastic pumpkins on the table.

Start by cutting an arm off of a sweater – I was able to cover the two black pumpkins using just one arm from one sweater. I used a different sweater and color to cover the orange dollar tree pumpkin.

A white sweater being cut for the pumpkin with a pair of scissors beside it.

Basically, you just wrap a piece of the arm onto the pumpkin – carefully stretching, cutting, and gluing it into place.

A hot glue gun attaching the sweater to the pumpkin.

Just glue it together, top and bottom, and then you’re ready to glue some twine around the stems and glue them onto the newly sweater covered pumpkin. I then cut a couple of pieces of burlap into leaf-like shapes (don’t be too perfect with it!), and glued them on near the base of the stem.

Done!

The pumpkin all glued sitting on two books.

Super easy, and I love the texture they add. I made mine a few years ago and they’re still a star every fall when the autumn decor bin makes it’s way up from the bowels of the basement.

Maybe you even have an old sweater lying around your house that doesn’t fit or is stained and you were planning to get rid of. These would be cute in other colours, as well as the white/cream that I used. Give it a go.

AND, like I mentioned, there’s more in store for you today!

  1. Very cute/creative indeed – so you could sew the bottom to the one arm and insert pumpkin in sleeve resulting in only gluing the top part, right? And doing the same to the other pumpkin – still getting two pumpkins from the same arm (depending on pumpkin size of course)……..love the look! Thank you for sharing……….

  2. I remember these! Still love them…so cozy for Fall! Thanks for hosting, my friend! And I hope you and your family are safe from the fires…scary! XO

  3. Thank you so much for hosting this Fall series, Krista! I just adore sweater pumpkins and I love the way you’ve displayed them in your home.
