DIY Crackle Glaze Blue Pumpkins

Pumpkins can be any colour you want, so why not choose to make your own blue/grey faux crackle pumpkins!

Blue. Green. Aqua. Teal.

Not necessarily the colours that first come to mind when you are thinking about Fall decor items.

Instead we often think of blues and greens as more summery colours: they draw to mind skies, lakes, rivers, and oceans instead of leaves ablaze in colour and fields full of wheat or corn.

But every once in a while, nature sneaks a little blue and green in where and when you least expect it.

I’ve always loved those little blue and green toned pumpkins, but never been able to find them locally… so I always end up with orange.

And I do like the orange ones. I mean, they are classic, timeless. And fun mixed with cheery, bright Mums on the front porch.

But my heart craves the soft blues. The pretty greens. You know it does…

And since I never seem to be able to find the real ones, I thought that for this months Make it Fun Foam® Craft Team project, I would make my own coloured pumpkins.

And these DIY crackle glaze blue and green decorative pumpkins are the perfect accent for a fall tablescape… tying in all the blues and greens that I love to decorate with, no matter what the season is.

To make this I used:

FloraCraft® EPS Foam Pumpkins {available at JoAnn’s}
Martha Stewart Craft Paint in: Pool, Beach Glass,  Summer Haze, Wedding Cake
Crackle Medium
Mod Podge Gloss Finish Sealer
Paint brush and bowl for paint/sealer/medium

Pumpkins, mod podge, and paint on the table.

These painted pumpkins are really easy to make.

I just painted two coats of the blue/green colours I used (Left to Right – Summer Haze, Pool, and Beach Glass).

Painting the pumpkins a variety of shades of green and blue.

After the paint was completely dry, I painted on a coat of crackle medium.

The longer you let it dry, the less cracking you will get. So based on that, you paint a coat of your final colour on the pumpkins while the crackle medium is still wet or damp.

If you’ve never used it before, experiment a little first. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun to use.

My final coat was Wedding Cake – a crisp but warm white.

After the paint was dry, I gave the pumpkins three coats of high gloss finish using Gloss Mod Podge.

I was trying to replicate the look of a shiny crackle glazed ceramic pumpkin.

Done!

Well, what do you think of blue and green pumpkins?

I love the way the colour peaks through and adds to the overall blue/green feel of our dining room but is still subtle with the white over top.

I can’t wait to show you the rest of this space, tomorrow!
