DIY Envelope Pillows from Vintage French Linen Tea Towels

DIY envelope pillows made from vintage french linen tea towels by Living Vintage at The Happy Housie

Hello, everyone. My name is Kim Gaynor. I blog over at Living Vintage. As my blog name implies, I live and breathe anything that has a vintage element to it, whether that be decorating my home with salvaged materials, sharing a beautiful abandoned house, preparing a home cooked meal, or sharing a vintage image with a thought-provoking quote. I also have a blog series that’s very popular called Friday Favorites where I share 8 images that inspire me.

Anyway, the reason I am here today:   I am teaching myself how to sew again after 30 years. (Yes, 3 decades. The last time I sewed was in high school.)

Many months ago, I won two vintage French linen tea towels, and ever since then, I knew I’d turn at least one of them into a pillow or two.

Well, first I had to read numerous tutorials to feel confident enough to sew. Fortunately for me, I discovered Krista’s tutorial, and it was so well-written and photographed that I decided to take the plunge and make my first pillows. Seriously, a newbie like me needs everything spelled out.

I decided to cut one of the tea towels in half to make two pillows because I didn’t want to “waste” the expensive fabric on the back of the pillow. I had seen an idea on Pinterest where the seamstress used blue ticking so that’s what I decided to do. Blue ticking has such a vintage vibe, don’t you know.

As I was measuring to cut my fabric, I discovered that the two finished pillows would be the size of standard bed pillows, so there was no need to make custom pillow forms! Yay for me.

Also, Krista’s tutorial is so excellent because she’s one of the few blogs I’ve seen that a formula for making envelope pillows for any size pillow. So handy!

I am so pleased with how my pillows turned out that I’m planning to sew many more. Maybe the next pillow I make will use some of the vintage hankie’s I’ve been buying lately!

Thanks for sharing these beautiful DIY Envelope Pillows from your Vintage French Tea Towels, Kim! I absolutely love the beautiful, vintage character and feel that they have – the blue ticking was the perfect thing to back them with.

I always love hearing success stories of what people have made after following my easy DIY pillow tutorials. Kim used the two-piece envelope pillow tutorial for these pillows… with different fabrics on the back and front:
