DIY Faux Wood Vintage Style U-Cut Christmas Tree Sign

You guys.

I’m pretty excited about this project.

Ever since I created the faux wood LAKE sign for our front entry hall last summer I’ve been itching to make another faux wood sign.

I just can’t believe how realistic they look!

And how lightweight they are!

And this faux wood vintage style U-Cut Christmas Tree Sign was the perfect addition to our Christmasy foyer this year.

I love how it turned out!

Maybe you spotted it yesterday if you had a chance to take our Christmas Front Porch and Entry Hall tour?!?

This month’s DIY Challenge Project is “Holiday Knock Offs”; and I spotted this cute faux wood Christmas Tree Sign while trolling through holiday decor online.

Cute, right?!

But it’s actually just a print, ready to be framed. And it’s only 8×10.

I wanted a really wooden looking sign! Or one made of actual wood. Like one of these beautiful ones available on Etsy…

This one is a 12×18 – a bit bigger but the wrong shape for our entry hall…

And this cute one is the right shape, but only 9.5″ by 25″ and I wanted something a little bigger for our entry hall wall…though I definitely like the framing on it.

So I decided to take all my inspiration and come up with my own version. And my own size!

And the perfect thing to use?! A piece of Make it Fun Foam in a 12″ by 36″ size. Just like in my faux wood LAKE sign…

To make this I used:

Make It: Fun Crafts® Foam Sheet– I used a full 1/2″ thick by 12″x36″ sheet
Make It: Fun Crafts® Smooth Finish
Make It: Fun® Foam Knife and Tuck & Scribe Tools (part of the Foam Tools set)
FloraCraft Styro Cutter Plus
Putty Knife
High Grit Sand Paper (I used 220 grit)
Wood stain wipes
Acrylic Craft Paint in four colours (I used Martha Stewart “Summer Linen”, “Green Olive“, and “Tartan Red” as well as “Beetle Black“)
Brown Sharpie Pen
Long ruler
Printed lettering and arrow (Download the printables below)
Carbon tracing paper
Jute Sisal Twine

Once I had turned my foam piece into “wood”, I printed out some lettering and used transfer paper to transfer it onto my “wood” by simply placing the transfer paper (black side down) underneath the lettering and then using a pencil to trace over the letters.

Then I just filled in my lettering and Christmas tree shape with craft paint, and filled in the tree trunk with a brown sharpie.

If you want to make this yourself, I have the word documents available for download for the lettering and the Christmas Tree shape.
