DIY Harry Potter Potion Bottles with Free Printable Labels (and Halloween Mantel!)

Today I’m excited to be sharing these easy DIY potion bottles made with potion labels inspired by the Harry Potter Series.

We’re still very much into Harry Potter around here these days.  I’m currently finishing off the fourth novel with my  youngest, and just about through the fifth one with my oldest son.  The boys are loving the characters and fantasy world come alive as we read together each night before bed.  So when we started discussing Halloween this year, they immediately began imagining which Harry Potter characters they might dress up as.  We even started talking about what characters their friends might be.  Apparently I’m going as Mrs. Weasley.  I guess it’s the red hair?

So since we’ve got Harry Potter on our mind this Halloween, I decided to carry it through to the Halloween free printables that I shared last week, as that further inspired today’s DIY project: these cute and easy DIY potion bottles (with free printable labels!) inspired by magic potion ingredients found in Snape’s stores…

And today I’m joined by 19 friends who are also sharing their adorable and fun DIY Halloween ideas.  Be sure to check out what they have to share with you at the bottom of today’s post!

To make these potions, you can gather up some bottles that you have stored in your home, or pick up some inexpensive bottles at a thrift store or the dollar store.  I used a mix of dollar store bottles as well as jars/bottles that I already owned and wasn’t using.

You’ll also need to gather some supplies; you need the free printable labels (see below), some Mod Podge (or other decoupage medium – flat or matte finish is best), a paint brush, scissors, and possibly some craft paint to fill the insides of any clear bottles.

The supplies laid out for the DIY.

Begin by filling any clear bottles that you plan to use with paint (as needed).  For example, I filled the “unicorn blood” bottle with red craft paint (slightly watered down so it would swish around better), and the dragon’s blood was filled with a combination of blue and black.

Next, cut out the labels you have printed and affix them to the bottles or jars using decoupage medium.  First add the medium to the back of the label, then press it into place on the bottle or jar and cover the front surface with a coat of the decoupage medium.  Allow to dry, stuff with appropriate “props” and display!

For example, while I filled the clear jars with red and blue for the “blood” ingredient labels; I stuffed the Mandrake and Gillyweed jars with some faux greenery from my seasonal stores.  I also filled the “Powdered Asphodel” jar with some powdered sugar.  Easy ingredients that make them look cute and realistic!

I was pretty inspired, between the potion bottles and the free printable Harry Potter quotes, so I put together a Harry Potter inspired Halloween Mantel…

  1. I started reading the Harry Potter books when my son was nine because I wanted to know what all the hype was about before I let him read them. I was hooked by the first chapter! Now we have enjoyed all the books together and the movies as a family. Love this craft idea and I hope your kids have a wonderful Halloween celebrating Harry. #HomeMattersParty
