DIY Modern Geometric Vases with Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic Spray Paint

Today I’m sharing a quick and easy DIY project turning simple dollar store vases into modern geometric vases using Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic spray paint in Gilded Bronze and Pure Gold.

Do you ever comb the aisles of the dollar store checking out all the affordable little finds and thinking about creative ways that you could transform them to suit your seasonal decor? Yes? No? Just me?  Well, as soon as I spotted these simple, classic shapes vases I knew they would be perfect for some kind of fun DIY project, and when it came time to begin thinking about seasonal DIYs for fall I knew just the thing I wanted to do with them.  I was recently invited to participate in Rust-Oleum’s #SprayNewLife challenge and knew that using Rust-Oleum’s Universal Metallic Paint & Primer In One was the perfect way to give these inexpensive dollar store vases a modern and elegant feel!  (See the contest details at the end of my tutorial).  These vases  look beautiful as a fall centrepiece but could easily be used during the Christmas holiday season. In fact, they’d make lovely little vases to use as hostess gifts (even better filled with a fresh floral bouquet), and would be stunning as the centerpiece on wedding tables.  I think you could even use this technique for painting glass candle holders!

I’m also really excited that today is the kick-off of the Fall Seasonal Simplicity Series, which means that some of my blogging friends are sharing their fabulous Fall DIY projects today as well.  Be sure to see what they are sharing at the bottom of today’s post!

To make these….

Materials:

  • Glass vases (mine are from Dollar Tree)
  • Painter’s Tape in Different Widths
  • Scissors
  • Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic Paint & Primer in One in Gilded Brass and Pure Gold

Begin my washing and thoroughly drying the vase(s) so that they are clean and free of any dirt or dust and ready to paint.

Apply the painter’s tape in an angled pattern, overlapping the tape to create lines and angles that will be left clear glass after the paint has been applied.

Carefully cut the tape at the top of the vase and bottom of the vase so that it doesn’t overlap on the ends. A second design option is to cut various sized squares of tape and place randomly around the vase.

Place the glass vase open end down on a drop-cloth or some cardboard so that no paint can get inside the vase during painting.

I chose Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic spray paint because it has a primer and paint in one, offers one coat coverage, and is guaranteed to stick well to a glossy surface like glass.  In fact, it covers in one coat for all kinds of surfaces like metal, wicker, wood, vinyl, concrete, and even laminate plastic and can be used on interior or exterior surfaces.  I used the Metallic paint because I thought the Pure Gold and  Gilded Brass colours would work well with the finishes in our new kitchen design.  I also used the Gilded Brass colour to refresh the silver toned hardware on our bathroom vanity – you can see it in this post. In addition to the Metallic Paint finishes, Universal (primer and paint in one) is also available in clear, enamel paint and primer, hammered and even pearl metallic.

Before painting, shake the first color paint can for one minute after the mixing ball rattles.  Spray the vases, going over the taped areas as well, using slow, back-and-forth motions, slightly overlapping each coat for even coverage.  Apply 1-2 coats, letting each dry for about 30 minutes before applying the next.  I did two vases with the Gilded Brass colour and one of the vases in Pure Gold.

Allow your project to dry for at least 1 hour before handling and at least 24 hours before using.

Carefully peel the tape off the vases to reveal the pattern.

Fill with flowers and enjoy!

Doesn’t this fit perfectly with this new little nook in our kitchen?!

And I think they’ll be perfect as the centrepiece for my fall tablescape this year.  I can’t wait to use them for that!

And for my fellow Canadian friends, Rust-Oleum Canada is currently running a contest to encourage you to share your own #spraynewlife projects with them!  The contest is open on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram.  To be eligible to enter, all you need to do is post a photo or video of your own Spray New Life project, tag @RustoleumCA and use the hashtag #spraynewlife!  There is a new winner announced each month during the summer, and the each winner gets to select a $500 giftcard to the home improvement store of their choice!  Head over to the RustoleumCA pages on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram for more details.
