Mother’s Day Gift Idea: DIY Sharpie Quote Tea Pot
Hello everyone! Happy Easter weekend to y’all. We are nearly a month into Spring and before you know it April will be on it’s way out (hopefully taking the rain with it…) and May will be upon us. You know what that means. Mother’s Day. Now, I bet many of you are mothers yourselves. Or maybe grandmothers. Or friends or sisters of husbands of mothers? Many of us are responsible for thinking of a “Mother’s Day” gift for someone (be it your Mom, your husband’s Mom… your sister… etc.) and this cute little personalized DIY Sharpie Quote Tea Pot would be great for many a Mom out there.
To make this I used:
-a plain white ceramic tea pot (I got mine at Walmart for $9)
– an oil based Sharpie paint pen
I started out with this plain old ceramic tea pot that I picked up at Walmart for about $9.
I made sure to use oil based Sharpie paint pens for my quotes as I find that, once baked, the oil based pens cure much better and hold up very well. I have tried a similar project with regular sharpies before and they eventually washed off the cups. So when you go to the craft store, make sure you pick up oil based pens….I chose black because I wanted the crisp, graphic look of black and white but it would look equally stunning in a color or a metallic paint color (gold and white?!?!).
I looked up quotes online and searched for ones that would appeal to the recipient of my Quote Tea Pot. I chose to do some nice inspiring quotes about life… but you could definitely choose quotes about Motherhood, children, love etc… Whatever you think would mean the most to the person you are creating the tea pot for. Just google “quotes about Motherhood” etc. to find some great sources.
Then go to town writing. This is a special, customized and meaningful gift- don’t stress about your handwriting. You could practice your quotes on paper first, but don’t worry about it being perfect. The overall look is so unique and sharp looking that little errors won’t even be noticed. What is it The Nester always says? “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful”. It’s true. Embrace it.
Once you have written your quotes all over it is time for some baking. No, not cookies. The tea pot.
Throw it in an oven at 350* and let it bake for an hour. Take it out and let it cool.
Done!

So what do you think? Have you ever made any Sharpie crafts before… like the mugs you see all over Pinterest? Did you use a regular or an oil based Sharpie? How did it work out for you?

I am wondering the same as Chanel below, would it matter if the tea pot was porcelain vs. ceramic? I have been having such a hard time finding a plain white ceramic teapot.
Hello! I think as long as your teapot can withstand the baking process that helps set the paint, that it should be fine. Good luck with your project!
Does it matter if it’s porcelain instead of ceramic?
I love this idea and I’m going to try it on mugs as a housewarming gift. How long did the oil based pens last with hand washing?
I Love this idea. I’m using this idea for the sign at My Cousin Bridal Shower 🙂
Awesome! I did it with regular sharpies moon ago and it wore off quite quickly. Thank you, thank you for the tip about the oil based sharpies! Love your teapot, looks fantastic. 🙂
Is it dishwasher safe?
Hi Cheryl! I am not 100% sure- I know that using the oil sharpie pen makes it a much more durable finish but perhaps you would want to test it on an inexpensive dollar store mug before putting your whole teapot (or more expensive piece) through the dishwasher? Best of luck with your project!
I shared your teapot in my post:)http://www.sewsweetvintage.com/2013/12/diy-sharpie-mugs.html
Thank you Michele!!
Can it be done with regular sharpies
Hi Karen! I did mugs with regular sharpies before… as gifts… baked them and everything and it eventually wore off. The oil based sharpies will last much much better and are worth investing in if you are going to do a teapot or mugs for crafty gifts. You could do several with one pen and once baked it has a much more durable finish.
I love this so much. I would like to try something similar for a kitchen shower I’m hosting in a few weeks. Thanks for the tips.
Sounds like a great use for it Kim!! Thanks for coming by:)
