DIY Speckled Easter Egg Place Card Holders

March! It means Spring is just around the corner!!

March always whips by so quickly for me; I think because it always begins with report card season; followed by a two week spring break during which we try to take some kind of family holiday; and usually by the time we get back to school there is only one week left of March.

Which is awesome; because April means that the forsythia and tulips are blooming and spring is truly launching it’s blooms.

I love spring more then any other season; even summer. The crisp, fresh air of spring just offers so much hope for what lies ahead. And after a long, cold, rainy and snowy winter we are all ready for a little bitta that hope, right??

Well, with Spring just around the corner it has been spring-project-central around here lately. I can’t wait to share what I’ve been up to; including our spring room tours… really soon!!

And today I’m sharing a super fun little DIY project to add to the beauty of your Easter table this year.

Aren’t these simple DIY Speckled Easter Egg Place Card Holders so pretty? I love the minty colour; but they’d look equally adorable painted in any kind of Easter colour. So simple! You could also use a similar technique to make Easter Egg Vase fillers; or to create large sized standing Easter Eggs to add to your shelf or vignette styling this spring.

The ideas are endless!

To make these I used:

8 Make it Fun® Foam Eggs in 2 5/16″ x 3 1/16″
FloraCraft Foam Knife®
1 jar of Make it Fun® FloraCraft Smooth Finish®
220 grit Sandpaper
Martha Stewart Craft Paint in Beach Glass

I started with my Make it Fun® foam eggs, and cut the bottoms off with my FloraCraft Foam Knife® to create a flat end so they would sit upright.

Next I covered them with a layer of Make it Fun® FloraCraft Smooth Finish®.

Once that was dry, I sanded it smooth with my 220 grit sandpaper.

Then I gave each egg two coats of Beach Glass craft paint, letting it dry between coats.

Once they were dry, I gave the eggs a coat of Crackle Glaze.

I let this dry almost completely and then added my top coat of Diving Board craft paint. Once the eggs dried, they revealed a crackly finish (the darker colour crackled to show through to the lighter colour underneath).

Next I created some paint covered popcorn seeds to help me create a speckled finish on the eggs (using craft paint in Arrowhead).

To create the speckled finish I did some practicing first. You don’t want the popcorn kernels to have too much paint on them or they will create large or messy speckles. I advice practicing a bit, and then once you find a look you like, you basically hold the egg over the dish and gently drop the painted kernels onto the eggs, creating a speckled effect. Twist the egg and repeat.

As the eggs dried, I twisted some gold jewelry wire to form two rounded top pieces that a cardstock place card could sit inside. To attach the place card holder, I just gently pressed the wire into the foam egg at the top.

Done!

The perfect addition to our Easter table.

And, honestly, I know they match our beautiful Mexican pottery plates perfectly but I didn’t know the match was that perfect until I put them all together to photograph! I have some deeply rooted connection to this colour, I guess…
