If you are a regular reader then you may know that I live in Canada and that we actually had Thanksgiving already early last month. And so I’ve created a great little DIY project that could span the whole holiday season – both Thanksgiving and Christmas! These cute and easy DIY Chalkboard Slice Napkin Rings even doubles as place markers!

And you won’t believe what I made them with!

Plumbing parts.

Yes, you heard me.

I said, plumbing parts. I’m pretty sure that these are called couplings, and you can find them in the plumbing aisle of your favourite hardware store. They are super inexpensive to buy – definitely under $1 each and they are nice and sturdy as well as being the perfect size for napkin rings. I also used some rustic twine that I had on hand – you can get that at your local hardware store or Amazon.

Rustic twine and a holder on the table.

I didn’t even use glue! ThenI started by looping the twine around once and tying it in a double knot. I cut the ends of the twine off as close to the end as I could.

Winding the twine around the coupling (napkin holder).

So then I just wrapped and wrapped and wrapped, pressing it together as I went so as to keep the twine for overlapping. I wanted it to lay stacked nicely side by side without overlapping and getting all bumpy and lumpy.

Overlapping the twine on the holder until it is all covered.

At the end I just tied it off onto the last piece of string with a double knot again, and cut it as closely as possible so you can’t really see the knot. (It is hidden inside of the ring, of course)

The twine wound around the holder, holding it to show the tightness.

To make the second part of this, I used some wood slice rounds (found some on Amazon here) that my husband cut for me using our mitre sew. You could also use a little hand saw to cut these from a round branch.

ADVICE: something I DID NOT do but wish I had?!?! SAND your wood slice smooth. I painted mine with chalkboard paint without sanding and it has some ridges that the chalk more easily gets caught in- I think the project would be perfect if I sanded it smooth first! I didn’t really notice until it was too late. Darn.

To attach my chalkboard wood slices to the twine-wrapped napkin ring I used gorilla glue. I think you could also use a really good hot glue gun as well.

Done!

I think the wooden napkin holders make a super cute and festive addition to a Thanksgiving Place Setting- and would work equally well on your Christmas table! Plus, you hit two birds with one stone by doubling your napkin ring with your place cards!

This is awesome! Pin it to remember it!

  1. Krista,
I love these napkin rings! What a fabulous idea to use plumbing couplings as the bones of the napkin ring. I will be heading over to Lowe’s or Home Depot to pick up some to make these rings soon. Thank you for sharing!
