Simple Elegant Christmas Decor Ideas with a Vintage Modern Feel

Our dining room and primary bedroom decorated for Christmas with elegant Christmas decor touches that fit well with the regular non-seasonal decor we have.

Hello friends! I’m super excited to be sharing a bit of a different Christmas style with you than I usually delve into, and it was a fun departure for me this holiday season. The last few years we’ve definitely had a farmhouse/boho/rustic/natural kind of Christmas style throughout our home, but this year I felt pulled to go a little bit more elegant and refined with my decor choices in some of the rooms in our new home.

I think it just proves that you don’t have to keep your style 100% matchy matchy (aka, consistent) throughout your entire home, as long as you have some central elements that pull through the whole space. I worked to make sure that my Christmas decor felt “right” and matched the space it was in, rather than having it be identical throughout our whole home. So while the living room space that I shared with you yesterday was cozy, farmhouse, and a bit Scandi; today’s spaces are definitely a bit more vintage/modern and elegant.

If you have hopped over from Rooms for Rent, then welcome! I absolutely LOVE Bre’s style! Isn’t her home so welcoming and beautiful?!

Today I’m sharing our dining room, powder room, and primary bedroom decorated for Christmas. In these spaces, I’ve focused more on simple, elegant and vintage/modern kinds of holiday touches. It’s also day two of the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Tour week, so be sure to visit my friends who are also sharing their home tours with us today! You can read more about that at the bottom of today’s post.

So the key to this whole post is that you don’t have to reinvent your whole space to “fit” into your Christmas decor. Instead, make your Christmas decor feel at home in your space.

For example, in our dining room we have a large piece of modern abstract art on the back wall behind our dining table. I really love the colours in that piece and wanted to tie our Christmas decor into that artwork, even though it is not “traditionally” Christmas in nature. I also really want to install some box paneling on that wall, but since that isn’t there YET it felt a bit blank and empty.

Solution? TWO trees, decorated with simple but elegant glass ball ornaments, chunky blue and burlap striped ribbon, and burlap and gold poinsettia decorations. All of it flows perfectly with the items we have year round in our dining room and the whole space feels like it has good flow.

If you’ve been following along, you might remember that I shared how I refinished this old oak dining table which was a $50 Facebook Marketplace find. I paired it with the modern wishbone chairs that we had in our previous home, and I love the contrast. I wrote a whole post this fall about mixing old and new pieces to achieve that vintage modern vibe. I think that our classic and elegant Christmas tree decor works beautifully with the vintage/modern mix, don’t you?

The sideboard is a new piece that I found at Homesense while we were building, but the mirror and old frame are both Marketplace finds as well. I think this is the perfect spot to display our DIY white painted dollar store nutcrackers along with my newest free Christmas printable design.

A mirror is on the sideboard with a wreath on it.

I really love how this area of our home came together for the holidays, and I know two trees might be a bit over the top for some of you, but just know… one was FREE and the other was found at a local thrift store! AND, you wouldn’t believe it but they are the EXACT same tree. Originally from Walmart, but I got them both free or “almost-free”, and I think they plank the art and dining table beautifully. There is a special little part of my heart that melts for symmetry.

To keep the tree decor elegant, I used a variety of Christmas ball ornaments in jewel tones that bring out the colours in our piece of art. The burlap poinsettias are another departure for me, but I love the dramatic effect. They tie in beautifully with the navy and burlap wired ribbon. And the top of the tree? I added a little bit of rustic crazy with some winter branches poking out. Always such a fun touch, and then you don’t need a “star” that I can never seem to get balanced correctly anyhow.

I’ve never shared a view of our new build powder room on the blog, but I thought I would today as I added a couple of simple but rustic elegant touches to this space (which I think has a “rustic elegance” to it during any season). FYI, the paneling on the back wall in this room is painted Knoxville Gray, which is the same colour we used for our kitchen island and our laundry room cabinetry.

A bathroom door is ajar.

It’s such a tiny space that I didn’t want to add a whole lot of theme-y decor, but I love a good holiday candle, and a few rustic toned floral blooms feel understated yet holiday appropriate. The wooden trees are also a cute, modern touch to this space that already feels elegant due to all of the gold finishes and the deep moody feature wall colour.

Our bedroom! So fun to have a bedroom that fits a Christmas tree and, in fact, it fits the biggest tree that we’ve ever had in a bedroom. I kept the whole scheme green with some hits of blue, and it works beautifully with the green grasscloth wallpaper behind our bed. I haven’t shared this room since the initial reveal, so it was fun to dress it up for the season this year.

The bedroom has a tree in the corner of the room.

There is a small chair in the corner of the room with a green pillow on it.

This vase was created using the technique I shared in this post.

And isn’t a cloche full of pretty Christmas balls just the easiest way to add some simple elegance to your Christmas decor? I love how it looks, and it was so easy and free to pull together since I owned the cloche and ornaments already.

These brass bells are my FAVE. I wish I had a garland full of them, and some big ones to boot. I’m still working on a way to DIY some bigger ones; if I figure it out I will share with you ASAP! If you’re local, I picked these ones up at The Funk Trunk. Such a cute addition to holiday decor!

Small Christmas decorations are on the table.

A tree is in the corner decorated in blues and greens.

The tree is very simple but classic and elegant with a mix of sparkly Christmas balls, pearls, and mixed bead garlands. I love the simplicity of it and having the lights twinkle away in the evening (which currently starts around 4:30pm) is just perfect in my book.

There’s the grasscloth wall I mentioned before… so you can see why this space lends itself to a green and blue scheme. We kept things simple on the nightstands by adding some Christmas trees and branches that I already owned, and a few pretty ornaments to tie in the greens and browns in our current colour scheme.

Although both our dining room and bedroom are not necessarily traditional in “Christmas colours” or themes, I love how they look and feel for the season. Working with what you have by adding simple and elegant touches is a great way to approach your Christmas decor. It means that your home flows beautifully with your usual decor, instead of feeling like someone superimposed (or “threw up” Christmas) allover your home. I hope my ideas have helped you think of new and simple ways to implement elegant Christmas decor in your space this season.

NEXT UP on this week’s tour is my friend Rachel, at Maison de Pax. She will have her post live for you on Wednesday morning! Be sure to head over and check it out -her home truly is a place of peace!

  1. Love your home and this post. It’s so light and airy. I don’t think you overdid it all with the 2 trees in the dining room. You don’t have a lot of little, junky things cluttering it up – all classy.

  2. As pretty as your decorating is, the one thing that’s calling my name most of all is the table runner in your dining room. Where did you find it please?

    1. Hi Connie,
It’s from HomeSense! So not a great online source for you, unfortunately. If you are in the US, HomeSense is in some locations otherwise it is related to HomeGoods/Marshals/TJ Maxx/Winners. Thank you for your kind words!

  3. Really really beautiful Krista! I LOVE all your trees…I could have a tree in every room in our home at Christmas! And how fantastic you put 2 in your dining room!

  4. Krista,

  5. Looks amazing Krista!! I LOVE the two trees in the dining room! Awesome steal on those – pretty sure I have the same one in our bedroom. Love the color scheme and the tree in your bedroom too. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season!
