How to Create a Faux Aged Matte Metallic Paint Finish

You know those little projects that you plan to tackle for months. Or years. And maybe even years and years; but you never quite get to them?

This mirror makeover project was definitely one of those projects. It sits on the wall beside the entry to our walk-in closet and I would look at it multiple times per day. Going to bed. Getting up in the morning. After getting dressed… and every time I would think about how I wanted to paint it. Give it a makeover. Maybe add some trim to bulk it up?

Either that, or ditch it completely.

It was just one of those pieces that bothered me; but not enough to actually “get to it” until we took on this One Room Challenge project.

Finally! The impetus I needed to tackle this little project that had been bothering me for so long… and with the design plan including a mix of metallic finishes, I though the mirror would be the perfect place to tie these finishes together and experiment with some Modern Masters Matte Metallic Paints...

To create this I used:

{Modern Masters Matte Metallic Paints are all available directly from their online shop}

Modern Masters Matte Metallic Paint in Silver
Modern Masters Matte Metallic Paint in Gold Rush
Primer – Zinsser Bulls Eye
Angle Sash Paint Brush
DAP
Drydex Filler

The mirror started out totally plain and flat, in a dark faux wood finish. We’ve had it for over ten years, and it was a really cheap Walmart purchase to begin with. I really wanted to bulk it up and give it a completely new look to work better with our updated master bedroom design.

We bought some moulding at our local hardware store and cut the corners on a 90 degree angle using a mitre saw.

We used our nail gun to attach the trim to the mirror frame. You could also use some wood glue if you wanted to; but we found the nails held it in place really well.

I filled the joints with DAP and the nail holes with Drydex filler. Once dry, I gave all the original dark mirror pieces a coat of Zinsser primer

Once the primer was dry, I gave the whole mirror frame two coats of Modern Masters Matte Metallic Paint in Silver.  It is such a smooth paint to use, and the colour builds up beautifully within a couple of coats.

I let it dry thoroughly and then used a dry brush technique to add some gold highlights. I used Modern Masters Matte Metallic Paint in Gold Rush for the accents.

To dry brush, you simply dip your paint brush in the paint and then wipe most of it off of the brush. It should look quite dry… like this:

You then lightly brush the paint over the surface, concentrating on the areas you want to highlight. Dry brushing is a very forgiving technique, because if you add too much you can always wipe it off before it dries, or add a little bit of your first colour back over top once it has dried.

I love the layered feel of the paints… to me it feels like the gold has worn through over time and the silver underneath is starting to show through. Adding the dimensional moulding made a big difference as well – this technique wouldn’t have worked very well on a flat frame. I think that the chunkier frame also gives the piece a more substantial and expensive feel.

The combination of the silver and gold finishes is perfect because we have a variety of metal tones in the room and it helps to tie them all together. It also has a rustic warmth to it that adds some character to the white, blue, and green decor scheme.

This mirror sits on the wall right beside our newly renovated closet – I can’t wait to share it all with you this Thursday for the reveal of our One Room Challenge makeover!
