Friday’s Faves

Happy Friday, friends! Are you as glad as I am to have Halloween over with?!? My boys had a blast and loved their costumes this year, but I’m not sad to see the end of “Halloween week” at school! They were dressed as Justin Bieber and his Grandpa…or something like that.

We’ve also enjoyed hosting our friend Erin from Urban Narnia for the week who has just this recently come back to town for a new career opportunity. She will be moving into her new house soon, but it’s been lovely to have time to visit and catch up as she gets settled in her new job.

Things suddenly seem to have switched from Fall to Winter around here. We had our first sighting of big, wide, wet “snowflakes” yesterday but thankfully they didn’t amount to anything in our area. Apparently the other side (East Coast) of our island (Vancouver Island) got a fair bit of snow in some areas, but we were spared. Though we do now have a fine covering of snow on the mountains across the lake. It was looking quite beautiful this morning, in fact…

The boys have been taking advantage of the fireplace to get cozy in the mornings and evenings the last few days…

For now, I hope the snow stays up there on the mountains. I’m not quite prepared to deal with it down on our level. And as excited as I am beginning to get about Christmas, now that Halloween and Thanksgiving) are both over, there are still a few other little projects that I’m working on and thinking about.

After what seems like years of neutral and all-white decor everywhere, have you noticed the number of darker rooms and paint colours that are popping up in the design world? Or on Pinterest? I’ve definitely noticed an increase, and with the onset of Fall (and now, Winter), these darker paint colours are really appealing to me! I shared on Instagram the other day that I’ve been considering adding my favourite dark blue paint (Hale Navy) to the upper 1/3 of our walls in the dining room (above the board and batten paneling). I think our vintage art collection would really pop… what do you think?

It’s the same colour we used in our main bathroom, and I love the contrast of it against the white paneling in that space.

As far as a dining room colour, doesn’t it look amazing in this gorgeous dining room by Kathy at The Daily Nest… (Visit The Daily Nest blog here)

I also love this indigo dining room and the contrast of the dark and white Via HGTV.  I think it feels crisp, and bold, but still fresh and beachy at the same time.

And I’ve long been a fan of this combination in Linda’s home at It All Started With Paint

An other option would be to add a piece of furniture in this colour, or maybe even just paint on small area with a pop of navy to try it out. I think I’ll hang my blue and white patterned DIY “drapes” that I made just to change things up a little and see how things go from there. I can’t promise that I won’t have a paintbrush in my hand by the end of today…

(PS – If you need to add drapes to an area and don’t want to spend much money (or sew anything!) then this tutorial is for you…)

Aside from considering painting RIGHT before it’s time to decorate for the holidays, I’ve also been searching for a small china cabinet or server for our dining room.

We currently have a sofa table against the wall closest to the kitchen, but I’d love something with a little more storage and maybe even a wine bottle rack. I am considering fixing up a vintage piece, like this one Via, if I can track one down that would fit in our space…

But I’ve been struggling to find something in the right size!

This modular style buffet Via Pottery Barn is basically my dream. Look at that wood stain colour! It’s called Sea Drift. And it’s only 13.5″ deep, so it would work perfectly in the space we want it for…

But I’ve also been considering a painted style like this sweet little piece Via.  I could dedicate on side of the glass to wine bottle storage, and the other side to storing our dishware. (We don’t actually own any fancy china!).

I also like the rustic character and detail in this sideboard, Via, but I’m not sure if I like this colour quite as much. I think I’d prefer it in a navy blue! But again, the size is great as it’s not too deep.

With my love of blue, and Christmas approaching, I’ve been toying with whether I want to do a blue and white and natural/rustic feel in our decor this year, or keep on with the classic cabin Christmas feel that I did last year (take the tour here).

What scheme are you thinking of this holiday season? Do you always go classic? Love red and green? Or black and white? Last year I shared an entire Christmas Style Series if you are currently looking for some great inspiration!

PSA!!

I spotted some good sales this week on some furniture pieces that I love; and that I regularly get emails about from readers and followers looking for sources! Our  favourite tufted living room chairs are on sale this week at Wayfair…

As is our  living room rug, over at Joss and Main. I love this rug for the pop of light, fresh colour it gives. It’s definitely affordable (and not super thick, but still comfortable underfoot).

Have a great weekend, friends!!

It looks like the fog is lifting around here, so I hope we get sun instead of snow…

Did you see something you want to remember?

  1. I know you really dont want my opinion from the other side of the world, but liked either of the coloured sideboards. Thought they were more in keeping with your style. But did like the wine storage in the natural wood. Go for the colour.

    1. Thanks Maureen- I think you are right. Something with a bit of colour is better for our style… and I think I found one that even has a spot to add a separate wine storage unit!
