Friday’s Faves

Good morning, friends, and Happy Friday!

Whew! It’s mid-October already. Seriously. Anyone wondering how that happened? It’s almost time to get out the Christmas stuff (#kiddingnotkidding).

September flew by in the blink of an eye. Did it for you, as well? It’s nice in some ways. We’ve settled in to all our new routines and the back-to-school thing. Soccer has taken over our evenings and weekends, but we’ve enjoyed some amazing weather the last few weeks so it’s been enjoyable to be outdoors watching and cheering on our kid’s teams. It looks like the weather has now taken a turn towards cooler, wetter fall days but the sun was nice while it lasted. I’m hoping we get at least one more afternoon or evening to spend at our outdoor fire pit

We started off our Thanksgiving long weekend with a Friday night visit to our friends house for dinner. It was a pouring, windy, blustery day but my friend and I got outside before dinner to decorate her beautiful front porch for fall. It was so fun to work in such a grand space! I shared the details on it yesterday – including a really cute idea for a basket full of pumpkins…

We enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving long weekend this past weekend with not one, but TWO, turkey dinners!

We hosted my husband’s family and some good friends on Saturday and then enjoyed Thanksgiving with my family on Sunday. I have to tell you that I’m pretty amazed at how well my first independent turkey turned out! I had a few people doubting my method, but I followed Jo-Anna’s instructions to a tee and it was AMAZING!

You can see that I’m pretty over the moon about it!! Krista, one. Turkey, zero.

I used the Paderno high dome roasting pan that my parents bought us for Christmas a few years ago and it worked like a charm! I love how the turkey lifts right out, leaving the drippings ready to turn into perfect gravy.

I also made some really adorable pumpkin centrepieces for Thanksgiving this past weekend, and I’m going to share an easy tutorial for it with you soon! These are perfect for your fall table; and don’t take up much room so there is lots of space left for all the FOOD!

The weather was glorious on Sunday and the boys and I got out for a run/walk to a nearby provincial park. They had to stop for some pictures under this arbutus tree…

As well as to pile up some leaves to jump in and throw around…

Days like this are when fall is truly at it’s prime!

We also went for a hike with some friends on Monday…looks innocent enough, right?

We hiked down to a nearby waterfall, and then decided to walk the creek bed out and back. Unfortunately I lost my footing on some slippery rocks and ended up falling directly into an icy creek up to my waist.

Classic. #clumsyoaf

I really think that I need to invest in some better shoes for trails – grip is super important! I’m scoping out these Under Armour beauties right now; and not JUST because of the colour…

I’m actually still a bit sore and bruised from my fall, but thankfully not majorly injured. I don’t think our household could handle anyone else down for the count. Speaking of that, my husband gets his cast off  TODAY! He’ll be in a walking cast for several more weeks, but hopefully will be more mobile then he has been up until now. I’m thinking we’ll have to leave him home from Trick-or-Treating this year…

Have you started to think about Halloween? My boys are starting to plan their costumes; it’s kind of fun because it’s the first year they’ve really started planning their own ideas. My oldest wants to be a “biker” (like a motorcycle biker) and we are ordering him a faux tattoo long sleeve shirt for the costume. My youngest wants to be an “old man”. He has been walking around the house with a fake cane perfecting his old man grimace. I’m thinking we will either order this costume or try to collect some of the pieces separately, as he does have some suit pants he could wear.

This past week I shared some cute non-candy Halloween treats this week in case you missed them. I love giving my students and my boy’s classmates non-candy treats because there is so much sugar overload at Halloween!

I also spotted some really pretty, simple Halloween decor ideas (including a “Halloween tree” over at Ella Claire Inspired

I haven’t done a full-on Halloween tour for a couple of years now, but we have gotten really into the Halloween decor some years. My boys have been asking about the Halloween decor, so we may even get some of it out this weekend and add a few Halloween touches. Here is a tour from Halloween past

If you are feeling like whipping up some Halloween crafts this weekend, then this cute Halloween wreath from last year might inspire you. It was super fast and easy to make and uses dollar store finds!

One of my favourite fall accessories is my giant wood roll pumpkin, and I spotted an awesome DIY tutorial for a similar one by my friend Katie over at  The Casual Craftlete

I love all the texture! I spotted a beautiful textured natural corn husk pumpkin on sale this week at Pier One, if you don’t have time to craft your own…

Another awesome fall craft by Katie of The Casual Craftlete is this DIY Paint Sticks Bushel Basket that she shared over at the Decoart blog.  I knew that I’d been collecting extra paint sticks for a reason!

I also spotted this super cute white chocolate strawberry ghosts Via My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia – perfect for a kid’s Halloween party, and just a little bit healthier then some options. I mean, at least they are fruit in the middle, right?

I’d love to serve these on this adorable Halloween platter from World Market, on sale right now for $4.99!

I’m super charmed by this sweet fall vignette  Via Paint me Pink – and Norma shares the tutorial for with a cute jack-o-lantern jar craft…

I also spotted this stunning fall dining vignette over at A Blissful Nest and can’t get over how pretty the blue looks mixed classic fall colours…

See something you love? Pin it to remember it!

    1. Hi Jo-Anne – I didn’t used to be a fan or turkey either, but it has grown on me. I loved this one, it was so moist and flavourful. Happy birthday to your sister!
