Homemade Simmering Potpourri DIY Gift Idea

Today I’m really excited to be sharing a simple and lovely homemade simmering potpourri gift idea that is perfect for sharing with friends, neighbours and colleagues this holiday season.

I think that some of my favourite gifts to give during the holiday season are those simple little homemade or DIY gift ideas that you share with your friends, colleagues, and neighbours. Plus I love coming up with a fun idea to share each year, and a couple of years ago I shared this simple homemade simmering potpourri gift with all of my coworkers at the school. I had one colleague come back proclaiming that the scent in their home was heavenly when they put it on the stove. And knowing that I helped bring a little bit of extra cheer to their holiday season was like getting a Christmas gift in return.

Now there are a lot of recipes for simmering potpourri that use a mix of fresh ingredients, but I wanted to fit my mix into these cute little clear plastic containers that I found at the dollar store, so I decided to dehydrate my orange slices and chop them roughly to fit better. I used my food dehydrator to dehydrate my oranges (you can read a tutorial on that over on this blog).

After adding the ingredients (below) to each container, I topped them off with a bit of baker’s twine, a couple of cinnamon sticks (to be added to the mix), as well as a little sprig of fresh cedar from our hedges outside. I also added these cute printable labels, that outline the super simple instructions for how to use this sweet little packet to create an amazing and welcoming holiday scent in your home. Fun, right?

Twine, labels, orange slices, scissors, cinnamon and a container laid out.

To make these little packets I started with about 1/8 cup of dried orange pieces, 1 tbsp of cloves, 2-4 small pieces of vanilla bean, and a tablespoon each of dried cinnamon and nutmeg. As mentioned, I topped it off with a couple of raw pieces of cinnamon to add to it while simmering.

Spices and peel in containers individually on the counter.

I added approximately the same amount to each of my small containers and then tied on my pretty ribbon and added the label. Done!
