3 Stunning Fabric Palettes for Spring/Summer and How to Choose Fabric Online

So I have a little bit of an addiction. Or maybe I should say a few addictions.

To MLS (multiple listing service for those of you not into obsessively looking at real estate).

To my morning coffee.

To Outlander and Vampire Diaries.

To baskets, bins, and labels.

And to fabric. That’s a big one.

When a new season arrives, I feel like the best way to greet it is with new fabric. Which I promptly sew into pillows.

And living in a small town of less then 30000 peeps I need to scour abroad for my fabric. Like on the interwebs.

So today I’m sharing the three stunning fabric palettes that I am choosing between for this spring/summer season… as well as my favourite three tips for how to choose fabric online.

I am choosing between these three spring/summer palettes… I love to start with a LEAD or main fabric – one with more colour or a stronger presence and then build from that. I am super excited to be collaborating with Tonic Living  on some of the fabric for my upcoming spring pillows, but this is NOT a sponsored post. I’m just sharing what I love and was inspired by.

My first option is this beautiful turquoise and purple palette (I ordered the top fabric, called Sakura Seaweed, last spring, and already have pillows made up in it. I was thinking about incorporating a second floral, perhaps over on our dining room pew, in a similar colour way, as well as adding in some new purple fabrics. What do you think? Maybe too springy… it wouldn’t necessarily carry as well into summer. But I love the contrast of the purple with the turquoise.

The next fabric palette that I am considering is based on this beautiful Neo Toile fabric with pretty shades of grey, teal, green, and a coral-red. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen that I made a couple of DIY Lumbar Envelope Pillows using this fabric the other day. I have considered keeping it for spring and bringing in some more aqua, coral, and grey tones along with it. But I also think these colours might be beautiful for the fall so I may retire them until then. What do you think of this option?

The third palette that I am loving is all about blues and greens. I have long had my eye on this key fabric; Gazebo Cloud, and have been on the verge of ordering it many times… I love how it ties in three of my favourite colours: aqua, green, and grey. What do you think of this palette? Pretty springy, no?Fresh Spring and Summer Fabric Choices in Aqua, Green, and Grey at thehappyhousie.com

My Three Tips for Choosing Fabric Online:

1) Make a collage –

Make your own collage just like I have done with these fabric palettes above. You can save images of the fabrics from the websites right onto your computer hard drive by right clicking on the image. Then go to PicMonkey! They have many free functions that you can use without needing to have a paid account. Choose collage from the top bar, upload your images, choose your shape, move them around in the layout… and generally see how you like the mix of colours and patterns together.

2) Use the Website –

Many fabric websites show you coordinating or related fabrics right within their site- this can help you find other fabrics that work with the main fabric you have chosen.

3) Order samples –

When in doubt, order a sample. I have ordered fabric sight unseen many times and it has worked out perfectly. I have also ordered large quantities of fabric based only on my internet decisions and then lived to regret it. A yard here or there isn’t a huge deal, but if it is for a big project of you are committing longer term to your fabrics, then take the extra time and get the samples. Then you will really KNOW how the fabrics look together and how they look and feel in REAL life!

  1. Hi,

Loving all the fabrics, hard to choose………sorry!

Where would you suggest I shop in the UK for such beautiful fabrics at reasonable prices?

    Many thanks

    Emma

    1. Hi Emma! I know that Tonic Living ships – I believe that they ship internationally. I also like the fabrics from OnlineFabricStore.net and they may ship internationally as well. I am not sure about stores that are located in the UK though, sorry! Wish I could be of more help – good luck with your quest!

  2. OMG! I love them all! I can’t really decide Krista!! So I did an eeny, meeny, miny moe and picked the coral, gray and turquoise.

  3. Hi Krista.
Love the Isabella Lilac, Paint Pallet Turquoise and Willow Storm. I have to agree that the second selection would have more longevity, but there is no reason why lilacs have to be confined to summer decoration. All three of these fabrics have the commonality of working with the base of aqua/turquoise that you use for all seasons. Go with your gut…..99.9% of the time it works for you.
