How to Flock Natural Greenery

Want to learn how to flock natural Christmas boughs this holiday season? Today’s post shows you how to flock natural greenery to give an airy white, dreamy feel to your Christmas decor.

Living at the cabin over Christmas this year has inspired me to create a natural, slightly rustic, ethereal feel to our holiday decor for the season. I want to keep things light, airy, and bright but also create a cozy and inviting feel to our home for the holidays.  I’m inspired by the image of a woodsy cabin set in snowy woods; a mix of white and wood with lots of natural greenery.  But to keep the boughs from feeling too dark and heavy in our small space, I want to lighten them up with flocking! Today I’m sharing how you can elevate natural greenery cut from your yard or the woods into soothing and impactful holiday decor by flocking the boughs yourself in a quick and easy to do holiday DIY project.

The only materials you need for this project are some natural branches, a spray bottle with water, and this flocking powder.  You can, of course, do this with faux Christmas boughs and branches as well, but I really wanted to give it a try with live boughs.  These pine branches I cut from trees in our yard.

I purchased this SnoFlock a couple of years back and shared how I used it to flock a fake Christmas tree in this post.

It didn’t take very much to flock my entire small tree, so I still had half a bag left to use for this project.  I barely used any of it, and have plenty left to do more evergreen branches as I begin to add to our Christmas decor over the next few weeks. You could truly tackle multiple holiday projects with this one bag of flocking.

I made a little video to show you how I flocked these boughs.  It literally looks minutes, and then I left them to dry for a couple of hours before arranging them in place.

How to Flock Natural Greenery:

1. Cut your branches into sections (though this can be done afterwards, as well).

2. Spread out a drop cloth or newspaper (preferably) and lay the boughs on the paper.

3. Spray them with the water bottle covering well.

4. Add the Snoflock powder to a sieve and dust it over the boughs.

5. Immediately spray again with water – this final spray is what cements it in place after it dries.

6. Turn the bough over and repeat on the back side.

7. Continue with this process until it is covered as much as you want – you control the amount of powder and flocking so you can do a light or heavy coating based on your preferences.

Tip:

This DIY is best done outside when it’s not too windy – I used a towel under my project but newspaper would be much easier to cleanup after.

I think the flocked branches turned out really well!

This little DIY inspired me to create a snowy themed holiday mantel, including a free printable snowy forest water-colour print that I’ll share with you next week.  Of course, my bookshelves are still decorated with fall leaves and pumpkins… the beginning of November is always this awkward in-between seasons time as I switch things over.

Have you started to decorate for the holidays yet? Now that the mantel is done, I’m itching to get into storage and get out our Christmas decor! Today I’m joining some friends for the first week of the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Series.
