One of my favourite holiday traditions is one that has been fairly recently introduced, in the grand scheme of things. My dear childhood friend ended up falling in love and getting married and moving permanently to Switzerland, where she now teaches at an International school and raises her beautiful family along with her native Swiss husband. They are such amazing friends and we miss them greatly, but we have had the opportunity to spend some time over in Europe with them and always enjoy when they make their yearly visits back to Vancouver Island.
As they live in the German part of Switzerland (Zurich, to be exact), it was on a Christmas visit several years ago that she first introduced me to Glühwein. Unknown to me before that time, Glühwein, also known as mulled wine in North America, is a very common and popular holiday beverage in northern Europe. In fact, with the growing popularity of hygge, mulled wine fits right up in there in the realm of things that perfectly compliment they cozy tradition of the season.
Each year my friend would bring us home little packets of Glühwein spices already mixed together so I could brew up a few batches of this delicious and special holiday treat. But as they have begun visiting in the summers rather then the winter, I’ve been left to my own devices. So after much research and experimentation, I have come up with this recipe for mulled wine, aka Glühwein, and want to share this awesomely unique drink with you so that you might wow your holiday guests with something just a little different this year.

Delicious warm mulled wine is the perfect hygge drink for winter and holiday evenings.
- 1/2 - 1 medium orange
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 star anise
- 3-4 raw cinnamon sticks
- 20 whole cloves
- 1 tbsp nutmeg
- 1 bottle red wine
Squeeze the juice from the orange and set aside. Zest the orange skin and add to the pot.
Mix the water and sugar and bring to a boil, stirring frequently until the sugar has dissolved.
Reduce heat and add the spices and orange juice, stir thoroughly, and then simmer for 1-2 minutes.
Reduce heat to low and add the wine. Simmer it on very low, never allowing it to come to a full simmer or boil, for about 20-30 minutes.
Strain and serve, garnishing with a star anise, cinnamon stick, or orange wedge if desired.
