How to Turn Thrift Store Finds into an Outdoor Dining Set

I love my recent thrift store finds and even more excited to use it outside as a patio set!

Have you been on the hunt for an outdoor dining set this year? We have had our eye out. Okay, I shouldn’t say “we”. I have.

“We” (haha, I) really wanted a longer table to accommodate lots of dinner guests outside…. but, man, are they expensive.

I guess “we” could have built one.

But when I found this little gem of an X-table with two benches at a garage sale for $10 I got a brain wave. I painted the wooden table and benches white and then also painted our old brown wooden outdoor table as well (you may have seen it in it’s original form on our deck last summer).

Put end to end with the benches along one side, the two tables together make a perfect long dining space for our back deck.

And instead of using traditional outdoor patio chairs I decided to “make” some custom outdoor dining seating using some old dining chairs I picked up at the Sally Ann and to freshen up some old wicker chairs we had to make great seats for the ends of the table.

  2. Hi!
i bought 4 chairs at Goodwill for $4 each, however, they are soooo hard and uncomfortable. Would foam or quilting batt work best??

    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Hi Amber! I would use both – the foam and then a thin layer of quilt batting over top of the foam – it softens the edges of the foam and makes it smoother underneath your upholstery fabric. Good luck with your project!!

  3. These are adorable! I love the colors you used. Love your site – found you on the Weekend Re-treat and heading over to follow you on pinterest.

  4. I love the colour and I would also have never thought about using chairs like that outside-they look terrific. I have covered a lot of chairs and it is not my favourite thing to do, for sure. Hate the stapling.

    1. Hi Rachel!
I didn’t use special batting – just regular batting that I picked up at Walmart. I am hoping that with the outdoor fabric, and by keeping them out of major rainstorms, the upholstery will be fine. Sorry- wish I could be more helpful, but I will say that I don’t “think” it matters!

  7. This is brilliant!! It never would have occurred to me to use outdoor fabric on regular dining chairs. They look a million times better!!

  8. I love your patio! The colors are cheery and happy! I have been folowing your blog for sometime now. Thanks for all the creative ideas! Shari
