Today I’m sharing a delicious but quick and easy recipe for instant pot split pea and ham soup; make a hearty split pea and ham soup the will please your whole family in less than an hour!
In the fall, I love to buy a large ham or two throughout the season, and the spiral hams that you can find at Costco or your local grocer are by far my favourite. I recently picked one up at Costco and it has provided our family with at least 5-6 dinners: the initial dinner of ham, scalloped potatoes, and roasted brussel sprouts followed by a quick and easy Ham Fried Rice; Ham, Mushroom, and Broccoli Penne in white sauce, and now this incredibly smooth and yummy homemade split pea and ham soup that I made in the instant pot. Using the bone from the ham is so perfect for creating a delicious broth and is even easier using the instant pot!
Making this in the instant pot is so quick and yet it turns out just as delicious as with a traditional soup method. After going this route, I don’t think I’ll make it any other way again. I promise, split pea and ham soup may look slightly less than appetizing but as soon as you take one bite, you’ll be sold!
Split pea and ham soup goes back a long way in our family. I remember my mother making it for us as a child, as her mother had made it before her and her grandmother before her. Coming from very old French Canadian roots that had relocated to BC in the earlier part of the twentieth century, my Mom spent many of her early years visiting her Grandma and Papa in Lumby, BC; a small town in the Okanagan that was founded by Quebecois settlers.
My mother shared her memories of traditional split pea and ham soup with this story…
“My French Canadian grandmother who was an incredible cook always had a pot of home made soup on the wood stove in the winter. My absolute favourite was French Canadian pea soup. It was thick and fragrant with slivers of ham and onions.
My most vivid memory from being at Gramma’s house as a child is coming in after following my papa around as he did his chores. My mouth would start watering the minute we came through the back door. To this day the smell of split pea soup with ham takes my right back to that warm cozy kitchen every time. Split pea soup is one of our family heirlooms.”
The other story she shares is slightly less appetizing, but hilarious none-the-less…
“My other memory is like a preview performance of a scene from the film The Excorcist. Papa and I were sitting eating our pea soup and he said something that 5 year old me found so hilarious that I snorted with laughter and spewed thick green soup out of my nose and mouth and covered my papa from chest to chin. My grama was not amused.”
I hope you love this old family favourite as much as well do!
Instant Pot Split Pea & Ham Soup
A delicous and easy hearty soup for fall and winter that is quick to make in your instant pot.
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 celery stalks, chopped
- 4 carrots, chopped
- 3 tbsp butter or margarine
- 454 g green split peas (or 1 pound)
- 2-3 cups ham, chopped
- 6-8 cups chicken broth or veggie broth
- 1 ham bone
- 1 tbsp thyme, chopped
- 2-3 bay leaves
- parsley, salt and pepper to taste
Put the instant pot on saute mode and add the butter or margarine. Once melted, add the veggies and saute for approximatey 5 minutes, stirring occasionaly.
Rinse the split peas and add to instant pot once the veggies are softened.
Pour in the 6 cups of chicken stock (add 1-2 cups additional cups of water if you want a thinner soup).
Add the ham, spices, and ham bone to the instant pot.
Seal the instant pot and put it to manual mode. Cook the soup on high pressure for 15 minutes. With the time it takes to pressurize and depressurize, allow for an extra 15-20 minutes to the total time.
Once cooked and depressurized, remove the ham bone and bay leaves. If there is extra meat on the ham bone, you can cut it off, chop it, and place it into the soup.
Add parsley, salt and pepper to taste and serve!
