Mess Free Painting of Our Exterior Trim!

The summer is moving along swiftly and will soon be drawing to a close… which means that we definitely need to get our act in gear for some of the outdoor projects on our list this season.
I shared the “before” of our exterior project a few months ago, as well as the plans we have for giving our home exterior a full makeover. One of the biggest projects, and one that is still very much “in process” and will likely not be finished until the spring, is replacing our siding.
But the lake-facing side of the house is nearly completely finished and re-sided, which also means all new trim work. Miles of new trim work…
The siding we chose is a composite shingle that comes pre-painted, woohoo!! But there are still miles of door and window trim that we need to get finished up before the bad weather arrives…
And rather then procrastinating it further and further, I decided to take the bull by the horns this past weekend and tackle the trim work on our upper deck.
So I have a confession. I tend to be a bit of a messy painter…
I’m a good painter, as far as the final product is concerned; but I always have to be careful to use the correct protective painting aids to make sure I don’t destroy the area around whatever I’m painting. 
So when it came time to begin painting our new outdoor trim, I knew that I had to use some painter’s tape to protect all the brand new siding, or I would likely end up with rough, messy paint edges and blobs of white paint all over the new shingles.
I protected both the siding and the frame of the sliding glass door with some Painter’s Mate Green® painter’s tape, and made sure to press the edges down firmly so that no paint could seep underneath the tape… 
Painter’s Mate Green® painter’s tape can be used on almost any surface you need it for; including painted drywall walls, wood, metal, glass, windows and trim. It also has an 8 day UV rating so it’s good for outdoor projects, like this one, as well.
I also had to be super careful around our brand new deck surface; my husband would not have been thrilled if I’d gotten paint all over that! To make sure the poly below my painting area stayed down, I used some Painter’s Mate® Double Sided Poly-Hanging Tape.
This stuff is awesome; you just press it down on your surface, place your poly in place and press it onto the double sided tape, and you’re all set! 
I wish this had been around when we were renovating and drywalling in our kitchen; it would have helped keep all the sanding and drywall dust out of the rest of our home without having to staple poly into our walls and ceiling.
Painter’s Mate® Double Sided Poly-Hanging Tape is the perfect way to separate off a room during messy renovations and is great for hanging poly in doorways and around cabinets. Next, I had to fill and smooth out all the screw holes in the trim, and allow the fill to dry thoroughly…
Then it was finally down to business! Painting!
Remove the tape…
And voila!

It’s so amazing how much cleaner and finished the exterior feels now that we’ve got the trim filled and painted.
The last couple of jobs will be to silicone around the doors and windows, and finish the siding right up to the top of the soffits.
Our carpenter is working on that! He is collecting the spare pieces of shingle siding as he works his way along the second side of the house, so as not to waste a bunch of full pieces of siding for filling in the top little bit. I can’t wait to see it all done!
What a gorgeous paint job! And using the double-sided tape to lay down the poly is just perfect. I’m considering painting the interior trim of a sliding glass door this fall, and will definitely need a good tape to keep the glass clean.
