One Room Challenge Week Three: Master Bedroom Inspiration & Construction Progress

Today I’m sharing the construction progress on our Master Bedroom as part of the Spring One Room Challenge as well as my Master Bedroom Inspiration Board.

Whew! Week three! We’re half way through already and I’m looking forward to getting the final touches in place on our Master Bedroom makeover. We’ve also BEGUN the kitchen renovation, so I’m hoping to wrap things up in our bedroom and ensuite shortly to eliminate the double renovation situation…

If you’ve been following along for a while, then you might know that I’m taking part in the Spring 2019 One Room Challenge – If you aren’t sure what I’m talking about when I say Challenge, I mean the “One Room Challenge“, which is a bi-yearly event in which bloggers try to redo one room in six weeks. For this challenge we are focused on our master bedroom and ensuite bathroom.

Last week I shared the construction progress and inspiration board for our ensuite bathroom. We’re tackling both spaces at once for this challenge, because redoing the bathrooms involved taking out a closet in our master bedroom. Having dry-wallers here to tackle the bathrooms also meant that we might as well take out the valance over the window in our bedroom… behind which was no drywall. So all of this also led to a complete ceiling repair by the dry-wallers. BIG jobs! Tackled pre-challenge…

Today I want to share that part of the journey as well as my plans to get this room cleaned up and styled now that the construction part is over. You can see all the BEFORE pictures in this post, but as a quick refresher here is a look at how our bedroom started out…

You can see the valance that runs along the entire exterior wall…

And here it is with the valance removed and the new drywall…

The closet that we removed is the one directly beside the door to the ensuite, below…

And here is that wall from a different angle, with the closet removed and the new drywall in place…the opening you see is the door to the ensuite, which we kept in the same place as it was originally.

Taking out that closet meant that the closet, below, became our ONLY closet. EEK! I know I like to purge and organize but I’m not that much of a minimalist.

SO…. we took some space our of our linen closet (which is situated at the end of the hall, right beside that closet space). You can see below where the flooring stops, the amount of space we took from the linen closet…

And the linen closet from the hallway… looking into the bedroom closet. We still have a good amount of space left for linens, as it juts into our son’s bedroom which is on the right.

Whew. That was a lot of work. I’m tired just describing it, let alone living through it all. We had to sleep in our son’s bedroom for a few weeks during the construction part, and he was relegated to the overcrowded and disorganized rec room in the basement. Thankfully he was a really good sport about it all.

So, now on to the fun part! Inspiration time!

I absolutely love these two bedroom spaces…

I love the paneling behind the bed in both, the upholstered headboards, the boho feel of the bottom space, and the pale blue/aqua/mint colours in the first space. I’m thinking a combo of these two looks.

First off, we are going to install some floor to ceiling paneling behind our bed and paint it white. I plan to use the same headboard that we had in our old house. (Did you ever see the One Room Challenge makeover of our master bedroom space in our lake house? You can see that here.)

We’re going to use our favourite wardrobe system once again in our closet space. Ikea PAX. I’ve shared about this system here, here, and here.

I’ll round it out with a rug, drapery, lamps, dressers, a mirror, art, pillows (of course, lots of pillows), as well as some great accessories. You can see my finds (or similar ones), below…

Yay! I can’t wait to have clean, finished, and decorated master bedroom that will be a nightly refuge from the storm that is our kitchen renovation. I’ll be back soon to share tons of progress with you, as we are planning to finish this project fast and furious style!

  1. I’m so curious to see how you trim out the Pax wardrobe system to give it a built in feel. Will you be publishing that blog anytime soon? I have to do the same thing in my bedroom and I’m curious to see how you do it. If you haven’t done that yet, can you suggest where I might look to get some ideas for this project? Thanks so much.

  2. Oh wow that inspiration space has some gorgeous trim work! You’ve already made a lot of really great progress towards changing the way things will function for you. I can’t wait to see the pretty details!

  3. Oh it’s coming along! The pictures this week and your explanation finally help me to understand what you did with the 3 closets. I’m looking forward to seeing your style in your new home.
